Why do they say this? Vent about job interviews.

I'm wondering if I am the only one who has had this said to them, or do interviewers say it all they time.

I have been to two job interviews in the past two weeks, in which the interviewer ended by telling me "We will definetly call you, no matter what we decide." I.e., they were going to call me to tell me that I did get the job, or if I hadn't/

Lo and behold, I have not heard from either! I think it is safe to say I did not get either job, but why do they say they will call me either way!?!? It is very annoying, especially when they don't follow through.

All they have to say is something like, "We'll be making a desicion soon, and you'll hear from us." And if they don't want to hire me, they scould just send me some impersonal form letter telling me so!

And, in both cases, they gave me a time frame! The first interview was on a Wednesday for a 1st grade teaching position, and the principal, who interviewed me, said I would hear from him by that Friday. The other was for a volunteer coordinator for an elem. school, and the assistant principal interviewed me. It was Monday, she said she would get with me by Friday.

I am just annoyed that they tell me they are going to call me either way, and then don't. Very unprofessional. They could just not say it. Do many places do this?

Yep, I've been told that, I end up calling them after a couple of weeks anyway.

That's also a line people use in dating "Oh, I'll call you" then never do.

I have been through the same thing. Last week ,I called to follow up to see if any additional information was needed. I was told the job had been offered and accepted to someone already. I felt like asking if they intended on letters all the rest of know whom they had interviewed over 2-3 days.

edit: Yes, I did/do send thank you notes

Almost ALWAYS with job search it takes way longer for them to come to a decision than they say it will...at least in my experience.

I assume you sent a follow-up thank you letter for the interview? Always a good touch. It's then appropriate to follow up with a phone call or e-mail another week or two later to find out the status of the search. As a former hiring manager, it sometimes just DID take longer than we thought to get through the process, and even though it was hard on the applicants to wait that was what we had to do. I always did make sure that all interviewed applicants were contacted once the decision was made.

Good luck! :)

I truly hate this interviewing stuff! I've been trying to find a job for over a year! I had a wonderful interview about 2 weeks ago and I knew the time frame for the call back for a second interview - the lady I would be working for was in Scotland on vacation. Anyway, I was told I would be called by the secretary for an interview and by the Asst. Director of HR w a decision. Friday I got called by the AD of HR - yup - they decided to only interview two of the 4 of us and I was NOT one of them. A very sad day! Yesterday, however, I found out that they are calling my references! Weird, huh? I have a different interview today - sounds like I could have the job - the employer doesn't want to put an ad in the paper - I heard of this one word of mouth - but it doesn't have the right kind of benis - got to have family health insurance, also only one week vacation and really weird hours. Tho I'll take it for the meantime if the one at the college doesn't come thru.

My guess is the same as Michelle - I am always amazed at how long some places take to make a decision - especially now when there are so many good applicants out there! Prayers and pixiedust as you wait and shoot some my direction, as well!

Don't give up yet. It often takes a lot of time to schedule all the people the employer wants to meet. Sometimes it seems it will be completed quickly, when low and behold, in comes another resume which warrants an interview....but the candidate can't get in to meet in a short time frame. Searches also sometimes seem longer for those waiting because although a decision was reached quickly, they can't notify other candidates until everything is finalized, and that sometimes takes longer than expected.

Good luck. I hope you'll get a good word soon.
