Why do some cashiers think they own the store?

I went to Staples last week on Tuesday and spent $130 on stuff for my classroom. It wasn't until I got home that I noticed that a package of highlighters that I bought (about $11) were on the receipt twice. I figured that I could just swing by on my way home from work the next night, but we had a snow day on Wednesday. On Thursday I stop there on my way home and they are closed with a sign on the door that says they are doing construction.

I called the store Thursday night...no answer.
Called Friday and spoke to a manager that said it was no problem to just bring the receipt in and they would put the amount back on my charge. I got his name so if he wasn't there, there wouldn't be a problem.

Today I go to get my money back and the girl that rang me up originally was the only cashier open. I explained what happened and right away she got really snippy with me. I don't know if she saw her name/number on the receipt and didn't want to get blamed, but I never even mentioned that it was her that rang me up. I don't care who rang me up, it was an honest mistake.

I told her that I spoke to the manager and she barked back that he wasn't there. She called a manager, explained the situation and the manager said, "No problem. Just do it as a return." The girl then starts getting nasty with the manager saying that she isn't doing a return where there isn't going to be merchandise to actually return. The manager asked her how much we were talking about and I said, "It was a $10 pack of highlighters, so with tax it's about $11." She told the cashier, "I don't think she (meaning me) would come out on a Sunday, drop names, just to scam us out of $11"

The girl mumbled something about not having the merchandise, so I had to say "When YOU rang me up the other day, you made the mistake, I just want you to fix it."

I'm really not a *****, but I can't stand how some cashiers can't just do their job, without acting like it's going to cost them money to do a return. I was a cashier throughout high school and college and I worked with some people like that. Get over yourself.

Okay, at least I feel better now that I got that out. :rotfl:

A good vent is sometimes all you need ;)

I worked at a cashier at a drug store one summer while in college. The moment that still sticks out in my mind was when a customer told me I had to be "smarter than the register" because I gave her the wrong change back. When in actuality I did give her the right amount of change based on the amount of money she gave me. She was trying to give a certain amount extra so she wouldn't get pennies sort of thing, but she did it wrong and so she ended up with tons of pennies! When I had a long line waiting to check out, I wasn't about to question the money given to me - if there was enough, I put it in the register.

At the grocery store I frequent now, there is one cashier that drives me batty - she always comments on what I'm buying and constantly reminds me that such and such brand is on sale, and this one is buy one get one free, etc. She's just trying to be helpful, but its coming across as her butting into my business

Wow, that cashier really had an attitude. And it doesn't really sound like there was any reason for her to have the attitude. She also had an attitude with the manager, who I would presume is her boss. Not very smart on the cashier's part.

I would have told her that it shouldn't be a problem since I didn't actually receive merchandise when she charged me the other day!

::yes::

But sometimes here on the dis you have to :duck:. I vented one time and got told that I had no feelings for others. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I've read some of thoses threads! :scared1: I'm always a little hesitant to start threads asking for advice, venting, etc because I know there will always be one person that turns around back at me. But thats the chance I take, right!

That's why I don't vent or ask advice on the dis. It can turn ugly very quickly. And besides that, I don't particularly want the advice of posters on the dis boards...but I like giving advice if someone asks. :rotfl:

Writing it out actually made me feel better, because I was a bit shocked that the girl acted like she wasn't going to do the "return" Actually, I felt better with the manager's comment to the girl.

I worked as a cashier in a few different stores during high school and college and maybe I just didn't take it as seriously as this girl seemed to. It was no money out of her pocket. Once the manager approved it, that should have been the end of her comments.

For a dollar, I probably wouldn't have gone back, but for $11, no I'm not going to let that one pass.

Yea, I think I have finally learned my lesson with that one. :rotfl2:

That girl was WAY out of line with what she said in front of you! If she had a concern about the transaction, she should have pulled her manager off to the side to discuss it.

With that being said, I have rung up an item twice by accident. Sometimes those darn scanners will just scan twice - either they won't scan at all or just keep scanning! When that happens, a simple return is in place. No need for a production. I could see the cashier calling the manager over just to notify him/her about the return, but not question the managers judgement.

You weren't heartless, you just needed your money back. Sorry it turned into such a hassle. :(
