Why do people use Travelocity, Expedia, or Orbitz for flights?

I have found fares cheaper on expedia more often than direct from the airline.

Orbitz is always my first stop in booking airfare. It gives me a huge list of choices and then I check the individual sites for comparison.

About 10% of the time, Orbitz has more available flights or cheaper fares than the official airline sites. Don't know why but I have found that is it worth the time and money to check Orbitz first.

As these sites offer to book a hotel, auto rental, and airfare at the same time, does it become cheaper? Do they discount for a 'multipronged' plan?
