While at the Disney store today (50%off sale, valentines, all watches) I used my dvc card for the 10% off. The CM could not read the faded expiration date, seemed not to know what DVC was, and was not sure about the discount. I pulled out my MKC card and relieved her from her confusion.

Why do membership cards have expiration dates?
Could it be in case we sell are property but try to continue to get discounts aat the Disney Store? What else would we use it for?

Just wondering.

There has never been any explanation. Nevertheless, they announced that they would be issuing new "permanent" cards to all soon (that was supposed to have started early this year but seems to be delayed). Your Disney Store problem is a common one --employees who know nothing about DVC and the DVC discount. (Note, that even happens at WDW when you try for some restaurant discounts sometimes, although the last couple times I have not had that problem). You just have to be persistent until someone actually figures it out.

We do not have expiration dates on our DVC cards. We have a memeber since year - 1998 and our cards are 3 years old. That is strange that some cards have an expiration date and some do not.

WDWMom, if you got it three years ago it should have an expiration date. Check the back of the card for a little blue sguare box that should say "Valid Through" a date.

We bought in Setember of 1997 and the date on the back of ours is 10/31/2002. I'll sure be glad to get new cards by then. I think that they need to change the card to have raised numbers like a credit card. I only carry mine while we are at WDW and the numbers are already starting to wear off. My husband use to carry his in his wallet and now you can't read it at all. Never had that problem with a credit card.

Maybe it has something to do with all the sales and DVC not wanting to have a lot of invalid cards around

The new cards do not have an expiration date on them. I just joined and received my cards in January and they do not have an expiration date on them.
