Why did my dd have to ruin my ham?

I have been wanting some ham for months, but didn't get any. My husband has to work tomorrow (Thanksgiving), and we are going to his mother's on Friday for the turkey dinner. So I decided to get a nice honey baked ham and fix it tonight for dinner complete with baked sweet potatoes and a salad. Maybe even some stuffing for dd who loves it. So I open the ham and get it ready to pop in the oven just to take the chill off. My 8yo dd says "Oh look Mama, you can see the snout and where the eyes were. That's gross." Now where that is true or if it is really the hind end, since she said it, I can see it clearly in my mind. Yep the bone looks like the snout, and I swear i can see the indentations of the eyes. BLECH! BLECH! BLECH! I really, really wanted some honey baked ham. Guess I am just having a sweet potato, stuffing, and a salad. Why does she open her big mouth.....LOL?

That pig would be very sad if he goes to waste. I think you should eat him.

doesn't a ham come from the haunches? well its still funny. lol

Cut it up. It'll look just like ham again!

My kids would be like "Cool! We get to eat the pig!". We're having honeybaked tomorrow. DH isn't a big turkey fan (unless I brine it), so our tradition is ham.

You could do my leftover ham thing. I cube the ham and toss it into au gratin potatos. Yummy-I have two boxes of them at the ready.

That baby is too expensive to go to waste. Cut it in slices and no more pig snout!!

Are you sure you don't have my daughter at your house? My daughter is a vegetarian and won't even walk past the meat/poultry department in the store. It makes her really sad to think about the fact that they were once live animals running around. I feel guilty every time I look at our turkey. She won't have anything to do with it.

A few months ago we went out to eat at a steakhouse and when they brought my husband's steak out, there was a little plastic cow figure stuck in it. Well, daughter saw that and the tears started welling up in her eyes. And, we're going to Hawaii over Christmas and I've been searching trying to find a Luau that doesn't have the roast pig ceremony. I have to admit, though, she has a point there because I really don't want to celebrate a full bodied pig as they unearth it from it's cooking pit either. Ewwwww!

Well dinner is over. I just couldn't bring myself to eat it. My dd did have a few bites, but mainly had salad and stuffing as she isn't a big meat eater anyway except for chicken. Hubby mowed down though.....LOL. He cut it up and put it on a plate so maybe I can stomach some leftovers tomorrow if I forget what she said. Oh well, kids can be so funny. Once she said it, I really could see the snout and eyes even though it couldn't possibly have been. You know...power of suggestion. Now, wonder what she will say about the turkey on Friday. This is my child that wants to be a vet.

If your going to maui I could help you. In Walia there is a not quite luau but a cool beach side resturant with sunset views, hawaiian music and hula dancers. But not meat.

I used to hate meat when I was younger and still dont favor it but realize that it has already been killed and me not eating the meat in the fridge isnt going to become alive. I cant become vegitarian because I need alot of protein as daily I either swim from 430-630 or run for 20 minutes.

Thanks so much for your help, but we're going to Oahu. I think we're going to do the Ambassador Buffet instead of the Luau at the Polynesian Cultural Center. There is a show with Hawaiian dancers that is included. Thanks! :)

The pig gave his life for you. The least you can do is fullfil his dying wish!

The roast pig at a luau is to die for...as others have stated...it is already dead, no amount of tears is going to bring it back. Eat and enjoy, at Thanksgiving or a luau.

I know what you're saying and I agree, but that's not how daughter views it. She sees what it used to be, a living, breathing animal and it makes her sad to think that it was killed for someone to eat it. We see a tasty looking meal whereas she sees an animal who could have been a pet or who could still be running free in the wild. She is extremely compassionate toward animals.
