Why can't the new Disney Ships have Casinos?

I was looking for more information on the two new Disney Cruise Line ships that are being built in Germany and there really isn't any yet.

It's almost a given that the new ships will have many similar characteristics to the Magic and the Wonder including spaces for kids, families and adults.

This made me star wondering ... Will the new ships have casinos on board? Casinos are a staple on every other cruise ship afloat - why can't Disney have one? I am sure they can place it in a location where it could only be accessed by adults - they can even place cast members at the entrance to keep kids out. Maybe they could open only in the evenings. The Disney ships already have liquor and bingo, why not casinos?

My personal feelings....it's a huge revenue stream for the cruiseline and I'd be happy if they included one.

I've sailed on many ships that have casinos and have never had to wrestle an 11 year old for a seat at the 3 card poker table. It's also unlikely that Lilo and Stitch would be blackjack dealers.

In other words, I say YES...but alas....I feel I am part f the minority on this issue.

I've never heard of a large cruise ship w/o a casino...isn't that one of the main reasons people go on cruises in the first place?

As much as I have enjoyed the casinos aboard other cruise ships I really do not think that it is the atmosphere that Disney is looking for.
It is one of the things that makes them unique and not just another run of the mill cruise lines.

I don't see anything wrong with an adult only area on a cruise ship. The ship is large enough for everyone and I'm sure there plenty of other things the kids could do so what's the problem? I guess I need to look no further than PI for the answer.

I agree.....but Disney's line of thinking is that everything should be availible to everyone. A casino is not a family friendly activity.
It is unfortunate that Disney does not realize that there are alot of childless people who cruise with them.

The spa is not available to everyone. The spa is for adults only.

The question is, would it add anything for Disney to have them. There is an anticipated revenue stream that is untapped, yes, but would it also bring along negative issues as well.

Disney doesn't exactly have trouble filling its ships, so those who choose to travel on their line obviously are not making a decision to stay away because of the lack of a casino. I also don't really believe most people choose to cruise because of a casino, rather it is more macro in that people want choices of things to do, whether it be a show, food, spa, etc, which Disney offers a great selection from.

I would not be upset if there is a casino on board. It is not something I am interested in. I voted no, but would not not cruise if there was one. If Disney had a casino I would expect that the cost of the cruise to go down closer to other cruise lines. If the difference between a Disney and other cruise lines were not closer with a casino I may not sail with them. Perception thing maybe.

What negative issues are you referring to? Having a casino on board would be another evening activity for adults to select from.

I am far from a big gambler but I like to participate in the occassional card game, crap game or rollette. This upcoming May will be my first disney cruise i think it would be nice to have a casino and another adult only area on the disney boat. I know disney has the squeaky clean family image they probably are looking to uphold but Maybe they could arrange it were they have a casino and some of the revune generated is donated to charity.

I don't like casinos or gambling so I voted no. A Disney casino just seems wrong. When I think casino I think Vegas, not Disney. It might make them money but I would prefer they stay family friendly. Being from a family with gambling addicts I can assure you there is a lot of non-family friendliness attached to gambling.

Disney has an image to maintain, even if a casino was located in an area that kids cannot access. I've enjoyed casinos on other ships and in Las Vegas, but I didn't feel that I was missing much from the lack of one on the Disney Magic.

I think it's nice to have, but totally conflicts with Disney's family-friendly image, so they won't allow it.

That being said, I found that Disney excels in keeping kids away from adult areas better than any other cruise I've been on. I like kids, but I liked having the option of being in kid-free areas.

I think that they have decided that casinos are more of an adult experience, and therefore they have not endorsed using them for revenue. I believe that emphasizing the family experience has been a good choice.

I personally go to casinos, but I choose to do that myself. I like that Disney has stayed out of this area and I hope they continue.

Regarding the ships, I understand the entertainment value of a casino on a ship. I think that on the Disney ship I will miss having that option, but I am willing to try it out. I could also see how images of Scrooge McDuck and other Disney chararcters could be used to promote this, and that would be unfortunate for children who may end up with a gambling addiction later in life.

I took a Royal Caribbean cruise and they had a casino. It was noisy, smoke-filled and not very appealing to me. I went in, lost my $20 in 5 minutes, only because my fellow travelers wanted to go, and went on my way to other things.

If you have sailed with Disney before you know they offer a lot of adult oriented activities, day and night. What I like about Disney is that they have separate sections for adults only. I much prefer the quiet adults only pool we have on Disney to the two all inclusive pools they had on RC. On RC one or the other pool was always closed because someone’s little darling peed in the pool.

People are also under the assumption that they can do anything they want on a cruise; they are no longer encumbered by common courtesy or decency. I was told by a former pilot for the Panama Canal that most cruise ships have at least 8 undercover marshals on a typical voyage to handle any "issues" that arise. Disney, by comparison, has far less marshals on board. Why? Not really sure. Could the lack of casinos be a factor, possibly, but I doubt that is the only reason. It might just be that all of us who sail Disney are just a superior bunch...

Anyway, just food for thought.

Have cruised and RCCL is certainly not a run of the mill cruise line, now if you said Costa....now THATS another story altogether!

You better be a REAL disneyphile to do a DISNEY cruise IMHO, the cruise is WAY geared towards them and RIGHTFULLY so as that is the accepted atmosphere....like they say....KNOW what you're getting yourself into!!

Disney doesn't have a timeshare in Vegas. Maybe it's part of the exchange program through RCI? Perhaps Disney approved this as an exchange property due to the lack of a casino.

I can see why Disney hasn't done it so far, but I'm not opposed to it. I DO miss the casino when we are on DCL. I'm sure the execs don't want people coming home feeling like Mickey fleeced them at the slots.

Frankly, I don't understand the whole thing over casinos.

I don't gamble. Cause I suck. I always loose money, very fast, so its not that fun for me. But I'd happily go to a casino if a group were going.

I think a Disney themed casino would be fun. It would certainly give me a reason to stop by.

As far as being a bad influence on the kids if it was on the ship, then how about the selling of alcohol on the ship. It is arguably worse for people and society than gambling.

I think the question shouldn't be "should there be gambling on Disney Cruise lines?". It should be "Would you still go on Disney Cruise lines if they had an adult only casino?"

Sorry. but I have cruised with most of the major cruiselines (carnival, Princess, Holland America and Royal Caribbean) and sorry but I find them all pretty much the same.
Yes....some have better dining and some have better activities but on the whole they all offer the same stuff....lounges,casinos, nightly shows, dining rooms,spas, shore excursions,etc....
