Why can't garbagemen put cans back the right way?

Is it really that difficult? They just can't seem to put them back on the grass - and they just roll around in the street.

This is one of the mysteries of life that I think can only be solved on the DIS board.;)

good question - one that has plagued man for centuries.

I like where our garbage man puts ours...right in the middle of our driveway...so that I have to get out of my car and move it to the side of the drive before I can leave for work in the morning. (DH brings the barrels in - not me - we have a VERY long driveway - so he puts them in the back of his truck)

:p and here I thought it was just us this happened to

Oh no, you're not alone. Driving around on garbage day reminds me of that stupid obstacle course thing that Marcia and Greg Brady made a driving contest out of.

Maybe it's just the American garbage men ;) Ours here, empties them and leaves them on the same spot.

I have to say ours are pretty good....we give them a nice tip at Christmas and they make sure our pails are not in the driveway, on their side or in the middle of the street....they had a new guy with them and he left them in the street and one of the regular guys told him to go back and put it on the curb.....not sure if its the tip or the fact that I talk to them and in the summer if I am out when they come I give them sodas....

totally remember that episode...

My can just rolls around in the street and driveway.

Yep, it's an obstacle course here too! If my can isn't on its side, I have to stop my car and move it before I can drive down my driveway!::yes::

try driving around them in a school bus!!!!

And let's not forget having to actually RUN down the street to catch the cans. And that's if you're lucky enough to be around when they start blowing away.:p

My dad said back in the 50's, the garbagemen actually went in your yard, got your cans, dumped them and then RETURNED them to your yard. Like THAT will ever happen again.;)

Guess I'm pretty lucky around here. If I forget to set the cans out they will even come up and get mine.

My FL garbage men use to irritate the heck out of me. They would usually throw the empty garbage can in the middle of the lawn, and the lid in the driveway which ALWAYS blocked me coming in. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

My VA garbage men are much more with it! :Pinkbounc

We always tip too and I'm certain it makes a difference.

A couple years ago, I had 5 kids in diapers everyday in my daycare and I didn't want to open the garbage can, let alone with garbage man to do it. At Christmas, his first in our area, I gave him a nice tip -- nothing I don't do for all of the service people who come on a regular basis to our home. It certainly made a difference. Ever since, my garbage cans are stacked back on the side of our driveway. I always know when Vince has the day off -- the cans are hap-hazard all over the place.

I also chase down the letter carrier, UPS man & garbage man to offer them cold bottled water when it's extremely warm.

Nope DisneyJules,

You just got lucky. I used to live on the crest of a steep hill. Plus I was the only SAHM. Few weeks went by without someone's can rolling down the hill. I usually ran down and got it for whoever it belonged to.

We used to live in a Cleveland suburb where you didn't have to take the garbage out. The garbage men would come in little Cushman carts and go to the back of your driveway and grab your garbage can and put them back exactly where you leave it. Amazing what my tax dollars paid for!

Now we have garbage people who come at 5am and leave the garbage cans upside down on the tree lawn. Sigh...

Is it unusual for us to have automated trash pick up?

The garbage man drives a truck that has a giant claw that reaches out and grabs the can and dumps it up and over into the top of the truck. Usually the cans are right back where they belong when they get set down.... though I do see some tipped over here and there.

My thoughts exactly, Melora...except I'm in Southern California too. Perhaps the automated trash trucks are unusual except for here? We have the same thing.

We have the automated trucks in Northern CA too! One can for garbage and another can for the recyclables....its nice not to have to sort them anymore. We also can get a third can for yard clippings or just leave them in a pile on the street and they come by with a tractor and pick them up.

We had the automated trucks in germany, they were cool! But not here in Indy.
