Why book a package 45 days out?

Am I missing something here? I already have room-only reservation at POR for 6 nights in May. I am considering adding the dining plan and tickets, which would make it a package. I called this morning, and the CM I spoke with said that YES, I could do this, and still keep my great e-mail rate on the room.

The drawback to the package, of course, is that I would need to have it paid in full 45 priors to the trip. Why couldn't I just wait until, say, 10 days before the trip and THEN turn it into a package, and pay the balance immediately. Will they charge me the $50 reservation change fee and some other $10 fee - I can't remember what they said that was for - does anybody else know?

I am interested in hearing others' thoughts on this...

I don't know, but it must have something to do with the fact that if you change a package 45 days or closer that you incur a change fee. Otherwise NOBODY would book packages - they would book room only so they wouldn't have to chance paying a fee for changes made between 45 and 7 days prior, then add the other package options the week before.

I had never thought of that, but it is a really good way to avoid buying trip insurance. Just book the room that you can cancel up until the week before, then add your tickets and dining at the last minute. Apparently other people already saw that little benefit and Disney is trying to stop it by charging you the same fee to add options as they would charge you to change a package.

I know that when I changed our room-only to a package, they had to re-enter my days, and see IF a package was available. ?????

I think it has something to do, with the # of rooms available to packages, vs. room only, vs AAA vs, rooms with codes etc. In theory, they could say that no packages are available, if you wait too long?

It would be a good idea though. I always worry in the back of my mind that something will happen to railroad our plans, and I hate spending $$ on the insurance. OTOH- It's kind of nice to have everything paid off before we go :-)

Hope it works out for you. Have a great trip.
