Why Are Ouija Boards Sold In Toy Departments?

Albertan mom said:
Yes, I went this morning. And much to my delight, they didn't have any! So I didn't have to spend my money, or talk to the manager. I will be watching at Christmas though, as the toy department is usually expanded then.....

Thanks for keeping me accountable! I wouldn't lie to you. If they would have had them, I would have bought them and destroyed them. And would have talked to the manager.

Instead, I got to spend my money on a new shelving unit for the toyroom :)

I personally think that Walmart is closer to the devil than any old Ouija board.

Out of curiousity, if you're that worried about them, shouldn't you be checking all your local stores? Why focus on Walmart?

Agreed. Walmart has steamrolled alot of great small businesses in it's quest to be the biggest, thus destroying the way many made a living. That's got to be worse.

*cough* Capitalism *cough* ...what America was founded on *cough*

But lets for a few seconds just reach kind of far here and say that for whatever reason, they ARE real. Why are they evil? Why would you assume that you are going to reach Satan, and not, like, your deceased great aunt Edna who just wants to say hi and share her favorite pie recipe with you?

Just to play devil's advocate here *cough*

I think people's opinions on Ouija boards may be based on horror movies - Exorcist (isn't that how Regan/Linda Blair became possessed?), and I think Amityville Horror (Jody the pig was the girl's friend/the devil - I think she used a Ouija board, too).

We never had any spirits in my friend's house - just other people's fingers, pushing the pointer around the board.

Which makes me wonder something? Is there any kind of "electronic" Ouija board yet? I'm thinking if there isn't, Parker Brothers needs to team up with a video game company and create one. Of course, it would just be a game, just like the board version. ;)

I know of a trance-medium who used a Ouija board as a 'training tool' as she and her spirit guide were 'learning' to communicate with each other. 'They' now do automatic-writing, years ago with pen and paper, now on a keyboard. I didn't know 'ghosts' could type!

They are just toys :)

Oh, and guess what, Pop Century sells mini-Ouija boards. Are you gonna boycott Disney now?

We used to use scrap pieces of paper and a highball glass as a portable Ouija board. It was more effective - the darn indicator on the Parker Bros one used to get stuck . Those were good times. We'd have fun with the Ouija board and then a round of "light as a feather/stiff as a board"
There used to be a wooden one in my Great-Grandmother's cellar. I wonder what happened to it.Maybe the spirits reclaimed it ;)

And don't forget that the Haunted Mansion has that evil fortune teller who evokes spirits with her crystal ball.

Albertanmom, the point is that if such so-called evil exists, it's PEOPLE invoking it, not a harmless game. The game might be used as a tool but if that concerns you, you'll have to purchase all of the paper in the world because a ouija board can be built out of scratch.

It would be like buying all of the playing cards in the world since those can be used for reading or all mirrors since some people believe those can be used to call spirits too. You can't stop people from doing what they wish.

My thoughts exactly (nodding in agreement..... there is no nodding smiley)

Yes, agreed.
I have nothing against cardboard, I do not think it is evil
Or monopoly. Or cards. Or candles for that matter.
But, when you purchase a Ouija board with the pupose of contacting spirits, that is when it gets spooky.

I believe that people can sit around in a room in the dark with candles, cheetos and a Scrabble game and try to contact the spirit world. BUT-when you see a Ouija board in the store, it makes you think "hey, lets do that, that could be cool'" It puts the idea in your head, that is why I talked about buying them. If they don't see them in the store, then it might stop a person/child from even thinking about doing it, when they had no desire or thought to do it before. Know what I am saying?

I am glad you all got so much amusement out of me!

Someone asked, I gave my opinion. Just as you all do. But I don't go around calling you people nuts, crazy etc... I respect your opinion, I ask you to respect mine.

I think that they are not a toy, and should not be sold in the toy department. Just another thought...can you buy bibles at Walmart? I don't think they have them at mine......

Have a good day! :sunny:

I could buy a Bible at my local Wal-mart in NY. I just saw them there yesterday.

Yes, you can, and they have a good selection of Christian books and Christian music also. But it might just be because of where I live. I honestly am surprised Walmart carries Ouija Boards myself, they won't carry music that is found to be controversial.

Yes, but I think they're right next to the Ouija boards....;)

So because you think they're evil, you should try and stop other people from buying them? Even so, you're not accomplishing anything. The store will just buy more. The more you buy, the greater the demand and the more they'll stock.

Seems to me that if you really want to do "good works", there are much better ways to use your time and money.

Just in case Wal Mart runs out, you can always get one from Amazon.com!

So is there some metaphyscial person working in the Parker Brothers factory that imbues these things with evil spirits? They are mass produced game boards, pieces of cardboard.

Where do you think Parker Bros is located? Can I apply for this job?

"Attention Wal-Mart shopeprs... It has come to our attention that Ouija games are evil. We ask that you take them out of your carts and come to our sporting goods section where we will be having a 25% off sale on our semi-automatic weapons and ammunition."
