Who's Gonna Have More Fun? Two PTR's for the Price of One!

DHS dining, let's see - we've eaten at H&V, Fairfax Fare, Backlot Express, and Pizza Planet. DS loves PP, so it's usually where we end up. H&V, if I remember correctly, was "ok". It was SO crowded in there the night we went - I think everyone in the park ate dinner there that night! LOL I'd like to try Sci-Fi on our next trip.

Good morning. :)

Good Afternoon

Good update on the DHS Dining. I think we have eaten at everyplace in DHS at least once if not more times and funny thing is I can honestly say I do not truely have a favorite, but if I had to pick one it would be 50's Prime Time and only because I loved the meatloaf there . In fact I would be happy eating there in October but DH said what about Brown Derby so I made an ADR for there instead. We ate at BD back the year we went with DS and his BF, the food was good but there just was not enough of it to satisfy two 18yr old boys.

I hope check out the Writers Stop? is that what it is called? Books and coffee , if DH should be a lil grumpy that will cheer him up.

Glad to hear your DS's bronchitis is better, nothing worse than being sick when it is hot.

I felt so bad when I read about your DS(9) crying over Jack and missing your other dog. It has to be so hard when you had a pet your entire life and then to lose them. I know my youngest when he lost his cat and then our dog at age 19, which he had had for most of his life age 2 and on shocked me when he said when he had kids he wasn't letting them have pets it was too hard when they died. He changed his mind a few years later when he met his gf/wife and she had a dog. In fact for his 28th B-Day we got him another dog after he had seen it and fell in love. I guess what I am saying is it will get better for your DS(9) and you too

Also after having 3 dogs I have come to the conclusion that they are just like children and will get trained when they are ready, not when you are
:rotfl:

Love the new pics of Jack and Jack's castle, glad to see he is a fan of Disney too.

Double Digits for Me !!!!:banana::banana:

We've never been to 50's PT or the Brown Derby. :confused3 I guess neither one has ever really interested us. I guess as long as Sci-Fi keeps making my steak salad the way I want it we will keep going there!!

I think I want to stop in the Writer's Stop too. I've never noticed it before, but now that Jodi said it was right beside Sci-Fi I can see it in one of my pictures above. I don't drink coffee and IDK if DH will be drinking it when it's 100 degrees out, but we'll at least peek in and see what it's like.

Yes, it's been a little rough with Jack. We love him and all but he is a ton of work. Constant supervision and constant taking him out. I remember housebreaking the last one was difficult as well, but he was never a chewer and was very well behaved.

We'll get through it.

He is hilarious in the sandbox!! :rotfl: And yes, we are making him a Disney fan right away! :thumbsup2

DHS leaves some to be desired when it comes to food doesn't it, especially CS? We are planning on eating at Starring Rolls on our next trip. I've heard really good things about the food there. Maybe you could give it a try too. I think it is primarily a sandwich shop.

We have eaten at Pizza Planet, Fairfax Fare, Mama Melrose and Sci-Fi. PP and FF were just ok. We liked Sci-Fi and MM though and would eat there again. I would consider trying 50's but my DD is so shy that I think the teasing might bother her. We might try it when she's older and she "gets it".

Got a few questions for you on the Fantasmic Package... did you think it was worth it? Did it save you time by not having to wait in line so long? Was the area that you had to sit in a good spot? (I've read it is way off in the corner) We have the F! package booked for MM this time, but I'm debating weather or not it is worth if or if we should just get in line like everyone else and save that dining credit. I also don't know if it would be worth it if Disney extends the nightly showings of F! into October.

So sorry to hear that your DS is having a hard time adjusting to a new dog. That's a hard one. It is a bittersweet thing isn't it? I'm sure once the puppy adjusts, your DS will too.

I LOVE the Disney sand castle!!!! :)

Yes DHS could use some better restaurants. Especially CS. DS12 mentioned yesterday that he would like to go back to Pizza Planet.:sick: It's okay, but the pizza just isn't great. I'll have to look at the menu and see if they have anything else. Maybe we'll try Starring Rolls though.....IDK. :confused3

As for the Fantasmic package, I guess it depends. If F! is showing every night or even several times during your week then I would say skip the package, unless you were wanting to eat at MM anyway. If it is only showing 2X all week it is probably worth it to have the package. The seats aren't bad. I don't think there is a bad seat there honestly. It is off to the right side, but we could definitely see everything very well.

Yes, getting Jack has been bittersweet. We love him and were so excited to get him, but knowing the reason we got him in the first place is hard. Hopefully time will help.

AWW!! Your poor little guy!:sad1: That made me sad for him..he's such a sweetie! Those darn puppies are frustrating..which is why we are still putting off getting doggie #2!!! I love our dog, but the kids would love another one..I am not, nor have I ever been obessed or a super pet/dog lover...but our dog was house trained and has never chewed anything! So, I don't want to push it! I have tried to many times and the 2 dogs that were really promising were stolen!!! In 2 diff neighborhoods! it was just crazy!! speaking of dogs,..we are taking her in tomorrow to have her teeth cleaned at the Vet...they said for her appt last year to get it done soon,...it's almost been a year already!!!! I really intended to do it after christmas, but I totally forgot about it...hopefully she'll do well....

I would love to have 2 dogs so Jack would always have someone to play with, but I don't think I could handle 2! :upsidedow If you've never had to house train a puppy, be sure you know ahead of time that it's not fun!! :scared: Good luck at the vet with your doggy! Jack goes next Friday.

Poor kid! I understand what he's feeling. It's one of the reasons I'm not ready for a pet right now. It's just so much work!

DHS Dining -
We've eaten at ABC Commissary, Toluca Turkey Legs (only DH), Studio Catering Co, and Pizza Planet (also some places when I went with my parents, but I don't remember exactly, because it wasn't "planned"). For TS we've eaten at Sci Fi Dine In, 50s Prime Time, and the Brown Derby.
On our next trip, we'll likely try Hollywood & Vine (breakfast with characters) and the Starring Rolls Cafe (it's always closed when we want to eat there).

That would leave only Mama Melrose's for Table Service on a future trip. We'll probably return to all the ones we've already done at some point for lack of variety, but Sci Fi Dine In is the most likely, because DH likes it so much. It's not my favorite, but I won't mind going back.

Wow you've eaten at a lot of places at DHS! I think H&V breakfast with the characters would be fun for your little one next time!

I suppose we will probably end up at PP too. :faint:

The night we ate at H&V it was very crowded too. I remember having to wait past our ADR time and then it being very crowded & loud inside.

You should definitely try Sci-Fi!! :thumbsup2

Good Morning!

I had to go back and look at your pics above and yes I see the Writer's Stop in the corner :) Now I have an idea of where it is since we have never been there either. DH drinks coffee no matter how hot it is, drives me nuts since I can see drinking iced coffee but not hot coffee when it is 100 degrees.

Speaking of chewing puppies, the worse for us was our Lab, and he never out grew chewing, nothing was ever safe

Our sheltie chewed as a pup but then stopped, in fact she chewed off the nose of my DS's care bear and he did not want her in his room after that :rotfl:

Now my Bella, she is a golden chews but only her toys she is so well behaved people are amazed by her , you can place a plate of food on the coffee table and she will eye it but will sit patiently until offered a bite. I atribute her behavior being so good since I was with her constantly from the time we brought her home where with our other dogs I had to head out to work each day. I think getting Jack while you and the boys are there everyday was a good move and should lessen the time to train her both for the potty and obedience(chewing)

Hi Sheila! :)

Yes, I don't know how people can drink hot drinks in hot weather. :faint: Of course I eat ice cream all winter long and don't think anything of it. :upsidedow:laughing:

Hopefully with us being home with Jack all day everyday for the next several weeks we can get his house training and behavior under control. :wizard: But most days I don't think that is going to happen!! :scared1::rotfl:

I had planned on eating there last year, the pictures I have seen of the sandwiches look so good and those cupcakes like the butterfinger one OMG. Not sure about indoor seating , but I do recall seeing a pic of tables outside.
I also recall they use to close around 4pm I think.
And they are on the DP!!!:thumbsup2

I'll have to look on the dining threads and see if I can find any pictures of the food and the restaurant. I sure hope there's indoor seating. I can't imagine wanting to sit outside for lunch, during the hottest part of the day. :scared1:

Good to hear they accept the DDP. We can use up some credits in there! :thumbsup2

Hey there! :goodvibes

Great dining posts Shelly! :thumbsup2 I have my Epcot opinions ready... we always eat the most there, but DHS is always my least favorite for dining. I think most people feel that way. But, I will say that we have had the Butterfinger cupcakes and they are DELICIOUS. Really sweet, but very good.

And - I wanted to tell you that I looked for Bob's shoes that I told you about and they are 'Swiss Gear' brand from Target. I couldn't find anything else on them like a model number or anything. I was going to post pics of them, but they are a muddy disgusting mess and don't show much about how awesome they are. Hopefully you'll be able to find something for your DH soon. :cheer2: We really like these

Epcot dining! Shelly, it looks like we have done many of the same places as you have and just a few more. That DxDP really did a number on my waistline those 1st 2 years. I've learned my lesson since then :scared1:

Epcot dining!

Coral Reef

We really enjoyed Coral Reef. We came here for dinner one night back in 2008, and had a seat right next to the tank. We liked it enough - but I feel like I would definitely do a lunch here next time. I remember I ordered a Mahi Mahi with a coconut cashew burre blanc and it was absolutely delicious. So much that I looked up the recipe to make myself at home. Bob ordered some kind of surf and turf and he said it was good, but wasn't in love with it.

Garden Grill

This one for us was the biggest Cinderella story in all of WDW. We visited Garden Grill last September and it was our favorite meal of the whole trip. The characters were fun, but the food here was amazing! Everything was so hot and fresh and I just love that they tell you what all comes from The Land just below. I can't rave enough about this meal. We will definitely do this again.

Sunshine Seasons

"Eh"

Neither of us cared for it. The food selection was almost too overwhelming and it was SO busy in there. I would definitely go somewhere else next time, unless I was randomly starving and in the vicinity.

Akershus

We had a breakfast here on our honeymoon and the food was pretty tasty, but the "face" characters were a little awkward for us. If we had kids with us, specifically a little girl - we would have loved it. We have fun with the characters, but this one was just a little too much. The breakfast is served family style and then there's a small buffet for cold foods. Neither of us really ate the cold foods. It was mainly smoked salmon and bagels and locks and a lot of mayonnaise based stuff.

Cantina de San Angel

Good enough for a quick bite, I had the tacos and Bob tried the Empanadas. The only real downside was that it was too packed to find a seat by the water and the Lovebugs were out in FULL FORCE. It definitely put a damper on the meal trying to keep bugs off your food.

Le Cellier

We LOVE Le Cellier. We have eaten there 3 times and every time seems to trump the last one. We were not surprised at all when they made this a 2 TS meal. I was a little bummed, but not surprised. This is the only place on property that I can actually order my steak how I like it (rare to medium rare) and actually have them do it PERFECTLY. I can see how people who like their steaks more well done would have problems though. It always surprises me that they make mine SO rare. We love the cheddar cheese soup, I really like their duck trio appetizer and I almost always get the sorbet for dessert and it is perfectly light and refreshing every time. This is definitely one of our fav's

Tokyo Dining We are big sushi people, so we like Tokyo Dining for that. However, I don't know that it's good enough to make the cut now that we aren't doing the DxDP plan, since we generally do this is a lunch and order a bit lighter. I don't know if it's good enough for me to choose it over another place for dinner in Epcot.

It seems like you have tried a few more of the snack places here though. Although, looking at the pictures from Karamel Kuche - it looks like we will be making a trip there for sure in October.

Thanks for posting the menu. I hadn't taken the time to look at it yet, but I knew I had read good reviews on it. I'm pretty sure that's what we will be eating on our DHS day. The menu sounds pretty good! You'll have to go ahead and spill the beans on this place as soon as you get back so I'll know whether we should eat there or not! ;)

Edited to add: I just checked allears.net and everyone had VERY good things to say about the sandwiches and cupcakes! YUM! But.... many complained that there was very little seating???? We're still going to give it a try.

I'm Baaaaaa-aaaaaaaack!!!:goodvibes

Anyone notice my absence???? Was it quiet? Was it nice???:lmao:

I have so very much to catch up on.

First off, let me say that I hope everyone enjoyed their Fourth of July holiday and that everything is going well for all of you.

Shelly--- that pooch is so stinkin cute that if you can't get him to quit peeing you can ship him to me and Beau Gator the Bulldog will set him to rights. I'd take him in, in a second. I hope your son gets used to him soon. Accepting a new pet after a loss is so very tough. You guys have been in my thoughts.

Now--- as far as what I've been doing-- I know you guys are dying of anticipation...

Yes there was a wedding!! It went off just the way they wanted and they are right now in the mountains on their honeymoon.

While we were in SC we were able to go to the beach --- very fun-----and I hit up the Coach store armed with a credit card and the phrase "Get whatever you want" from DH ringing in my ears................ :scared1:

:rotfl2:

It was a good vacation but I was so happy to get back to my routine and now I am ready to get busy with last minute details of the WDW trip!!!

With that said---- I think I will post my Epcot dining experiences. ::yes::

Dining in Epcot

Future World-

Garden Grill :

What we ordered:

Family Style Platter:

Warm Breads with Maple Butter
Harvest-inspired Farmer's Salad
Char-grilled Beef Strip Loin with Herb Sea Salt
Roasted All Natural Turkey Bresat with Cranberry-Orange Relish
Sustainable Fish of the Day with a Florida Citrus Crumb
Garden Fresh Vegetables
Smashed Potatoes
Turkey Dressing
Freshly Baked Strawberry-Rhubarb Crisp with Hand-Whipped Vanilla Bean Cream
Children's Entree Platter
Oven Roasted Chicken Drumstick
Baked Macaroni and Cheese
Broccoli
Crispy Sweet Potato Sticks
Dessert: Mickey "Mousse" Cookies and Cream

Thoughts: This is a really fun restaurant with great character interaction. Probably the best interaction we have had to date, on both visits here. However, the food is just okay to us. I have read a few reports lately that the food has been good, so I would go back to try again. This is one of the kids’ favorites. Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Sunshine Seasons :

What we ordered:

Turkey and Monterey Jack Cheese on Foccacia - with Chipotle Mayonnaise and with a side $8.79 (Kid’s fave.)

Children's Selection - Macaroni and Cheese with Beverage $4.99 (Belle’s fave)

Oak-fired Rotisserie Half Chicken - with barbecued mixed beans and yellow rice $10.19 (Very good!)

Sushi California Roll $8.99 (Mark’s favorite)

Thoughts: This is, in our opinion, the best CS at any of the parks. We all can find something that we really like and it is all so fresh and good. We have also at times gotten breakfast in the mornings of oatmeal and fresh fruit. We come to this restaurant at least three times every trip and have even cancelled an ADR for Le Cellier to come here instead. Shocking, I know. Rating: 5 out of 5.

Electric Umbrella :

What we ordered:

Chicken Nuggets - 8 pieces served with grapes or fries $7.89

Bacon Double Cheeseburger - served with fries or grapes $8.09

Thoughts: They also used to have Macaroni here for the kids but not anymore. It is an okay fast food type restaurant but we much prefer other places. Rating: 2 out of 5.

Epcot, continued:
World Showcase-

San Angel Inn :

What we ordered:

Tostados de Tinga - Fried corn tortillas topped with black beans, lettuce, onions, advocado, tomato marinated chicken, sour cream, and fresh cheese $9 (Good appetizer or even an entrée for a light meal.)

Enchiladas Verdes de Pollo - Corn tortilla stuffed with chicken, topped with sour cream, fresh cheese and onions, covered with green tomatilla sauce, and served with black beans $18 (Very good)

Puntas de Filete en Salsa Guajillo - Beef tenderloin tips sautéed with fresh onions and chile Guajillo sauce, served over corn tortillas, black beans, and fresh cheese $19 (good as well)

Thoughts: We have been coming to SAI for many, many years. We love it for its atmosphere and, more recently, for the food. For awhile, the food left much to be desired and we debated yearly on whether or not to give it “One more try”. I am pleased to say that the last couple of times we have gone, (since the refurb), we have been really happy with our experiences there. Rating: 4 out of 5.

Akershus Royal Banquet Hall :

We’ve only gone once, for breakfast:

Food is brought to your table Family Style

Fresh Seasonal Fruit
Bacon
Sausage
Scrambled Eggs
Potato Casserole
Biscuits
Cinnamon Rolls

Thoughts: We’ve only eaten there once and it was just us girls. The cinnamon rolls, fruit and potato casserole were heavenly. The other stuff we just picked at- Belle ate the eggs but MC and I don’t eat them at all. Most expensive cinnamon rolls we ever ate. :faint: The character interaction was really good- we saw Jasmine later in the afternoon and she remembered Belle, asking her how her breakfast was. I was really impressed with that since we had changed Belle out of her Princess gown and into different clothes all together. Rating: 4 out of 5. (Mostly for the Princesses!)

Chefs de France :

What we ordered:

Bisque de Homard - Lobster bisque $6.95 (Just okay for me)

Soupe a l'oignon Gratinee - the classic onion soup topped with Gruyere cheese $6.50 (very good!)

Salade Maison - selected greens, house vinaigrette dressing $5.95

Salade Au Bleu - romaine hearts, blue cheese dressing, bacon, walnuts, croutons $7.25

(I also ordered a Salmon dish that is no longer offered and Mark ordered a steak that I don’t think is on the menu anymore either. This was about 4 years ago.)

Thoughts: We ate here on a whim instead of going to Coral Reef (sorry Shelly ;) ). The bisque was not as good as the French onion soup. The salmon dish I had was really nasty- it was swimming in olive oil. They had just poured it right out of the bottle on top of the cooked salmon. Mark’s steak was just okay. The waiter was not that friendly. It was not a wonderful experience and has since sort of ruined us on it, so we have never gone back. Rating: 3 out of 5.

Nine Dragons :

What we ordered:
It’s no longer offered on the menu.

Thoughts: This was 3 years ago, before the refurb and it was a really awful experience all the way around. It started out that the restaurant was empty and we requested a table away from windows- I had a headache and needed to be away from light. They gave us a lot of flak for requesting anything at all, and not just sitting where they wanted to put us. (This was right next to the only other filled table in the whole restaurant.) We both ordered a shrimp dish and the shrimp were almost raw; wiggly, even. Needless to say I didn’t eat. But the coca cola there was really good! :lmao:Rating: 1 out of 5.

Le Cellier

What we ordered:(For Both lunch and dinner)

Tomato Stack - with Carmelized Onions, Cucumbers, Crumbled Blue Cheese, and Yuzu Vinaigrette $8.99 (yum!)

Grilled Sirloin Salad - with baby spinach and potato fennel tart $17.49 (very good)

Caesar Salad with Grilled Chicken - Romaine lettuce, parmesan, sourdough croutons and a creamy Caesar dressing $14.49 (Also very good)

Le Cellier Mushroom Filet Mignon - with wild mushroom risotto, white truffle and herb butter sauce $26.99 (I dream about the risotto….)

New York Strip Steak - with bercy butter, served with Gruyere-Yukon Gold potato gratin $31.99

Grilled Asparagus $5.99
Wild Mushroom Risotto $5.99
Sauteed Spinach $5.99

Thoughts: We have not been back to LC since they changed the dinners to signature dining. While I really like LC and have not had a bad experience as some others have had of late, I’m not sure I’d pay $40+ for a steak here. Especially with having such a large family to feed, and given the dining area is super small. The mushroom risotto, however, might be heaven on earth. Rating: 4 out of 5.

Teppan Edo:

What we ordered:

Garden Salad - Mixed green and seasonal vegetables with your choice of our original dressing, ginger dressing or creamy sesame dressing $5.95

Spicy Tuna Sushi Roll - Inside out sushi roll of spicy tuna mix, cucumber, green onions, sesame seeds, seaweed and sushi rice $7.95

Asakusa - sirloin steak and large shrimp $29.95

Ueno - chicken breast and large shrimp $25.95

Thoughts: This is an okay Japanese Steakhouse. Just okay. I have eaten at others outside of WDW that put this one to shame. The waiting area to be seated can get quite crowded, and if you do not like sitting with strangers at your table, this may not be the restaurant for you. The people at our table were part of a large group that was seated at another table in the room as well. They all kept yelling to one another and getting up running back and forth to taste what the other people in their party had ordered. It was pretty annoying and we couldn’t wait to leave. Rating: 3 out of 5.

Boulangerie Patisserie :

What we ordered:

Chocolate Chip Cookie $2.25
Mickey Mouse Cookie $2.25
Chocolate Éclair $3.75
Chocolate Mousse $3.35
Napoleon $3.70
Cream Puff $2.95
Cake of the Day $3.65
Coffee $1.89
Hot Cocoa $1.89
Cappucino, Cafe au Lait, Mocha $3.29
Espresso $2.82

Thoughts: We always try to get dessert here at least once if we aren’t too full from dinner and grab a table outside. It is always a fun time for us. I usually get the Crème Brule but it isn’t listed. I’m sure it amounts to 9,000 grams of fat but it is so dang good here that I really don’t care. Rating: 5 out of 5.

Lastly, we always get Kaki Gori’s ---$3.28 Shaved ice topped with fruit syrups: choice of strawberry, honeydew melon, tangerine, or rainbow (all three flavors) from the stand in Japan (so great on a HOT day!) And we always order coffee at various stands around the world showcase.

And that’s dining with us in Epcot!

Hey there!

Thanks! :)

Yes, DHS is really lacking in the dining department. Good thing they have Sci-Fi or I might starve. Okay, not really. But still. :rotfl:

I'll look at Target online and see if I can find those shoes. :thumbsup2

Thanks for all your thoughts on Epcot dining! I think I had a steak at Coral Reef and it was just okay as well. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say they liked the food at GG! Maybe it has improved since we've been there. I had an ADR there this time, but cancelled it. :upsidedow Yes, you have to go to the new caramel store, it is awesome!! :cloud9:

Thanks for posting the menu. I hadn't taken the time to look at it yet, but I knew I had read good reviews on it. I'm pretty sure that's what we will be eating on our DHS day. The menu sounds pretty good! You'll have to go ahead and spill the beans on this place as soon as you get back so I'll know whether we should eat there or not! ;)

Edited to add: I just checked allears.net and everyone had VERY good things to say about the sandwiches and cupcakes! YUM! But.... many complained that there was very little seating???? We're still going to give it a try.

Okay, we will try it out for you -- if we can get a seat!! :wizard:

On Starring Rolls - they do accept DDP and some of the treats - muffins, cupcakes etc. are a snack credit! if you don't do all QS credits, you could just use snack credits or get some to go for breakfast the next morning.

We have eaten breakfast there - just muffins and pastries and just used our snack credits for them and a drink or two. There's no inside seating, just out under those umbrellas. It's small, but cute and we enjoyed all our food there.

Welcome back Jo!!!

For the F! package, the seating is off to the right, the furthest and second furthest right sections (looking toward the stage). But when we went it had been raining and we were able to move in further toward center, because a lot of people didn't want to wait and see if they'd show it. They did! Thank goodness for those ponchos!

YAY -- You're back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :cool1:

Well yes if Jack-Jack the urinator doesn't straighten up I just might ship him out to you!! :rotfl:

I'm glad the wedding went well and you got to go to the beach and do some shopping on your trip! :thumbsup2

Great Epcot reviews. :goodvibes It's so strange though that we have such differing opinions on a lot of places there -- Sunshine Seasons, Electric Umbrella, Boulangerie, Kaki Gori, etc. :rotfl: Who knew. :confused3:laughing:

Well that stinks that there is no indoor seating at Starring Rolls. Hopefully it won't be a blazing HOT day when we are there. :wizard: Yeah right. :lmao:

Welcome Back Jo !

Yes it has been pretty quiet with you gone. Glad to hear the wedding went off as planned and you had a good time that included some much needed shopping.

Now about Jack............ahem......... I have 1st dibs on him if Shelly decides he is just too much boy for her, :rotfl:

Good reviews of the Epcot places, I just told DH yesterday that I switched our Le Cellier dinner to a lunch. So he read over the menu and decided it was fine he found like 3 options for his meal at lunch.

Did you see that they are changeing the menu some at San Angel and also the seating, now they will have long tables with table clothes. There is are pics in the food blog link below. Not sure I care for the new table arrangements. But I ended up cancelling our ADR anyway, but rememeber you said you go there each visit.
