Who Wants To Be a Millionaire - Walk In and Win Week

Rob, thanks for your offers of help (via pm) for dh... he has decided (after much deliberation) that since we'll only be there for four days, he's not going to give up a park day w/the kids to try and play... again thank you!

Hi there Lady and Rob

I keep trying to tell myself that just getting on the boards let alone the Hot Seat is an accomplishment but as much as I believe that for others I am not so kind to myself. (grin)

Some days there were not many in the audience and it seemed as many just came in when it was a walk on so I do fear that Millionaire's days might be numbered. Many other attractions seem to linger on with less of a crowd (COP etc) so maybe I am wrong. I am assuming that hot and rainy weather would drive more crowds in and as I tend to go during low crowd periods I could be mistaken.

If anyone does not have an allotment of Phone a Friends to call I have quite a few friends who would fit the bill well. My expertise is in English, History and Literature. My friends are my internet trivia companions and some of them are knowledgeable about most anything.

Rob, are you going to be there for the big day? I will mark my calendar and make sure that I send lots of Pixie Dust to Lady and other DIS friends who will be where I would like to be. If only they would tape there sometime other than the dead of winter but it makes sense that they would. Sure beats NYC weather that time of year.

My new friend, Jose, who will be there, gave me this tip. Fast is for getting into the Hot Seat, once you get there use every second allotted you. He is a former cruise winner and is planning on being there or being a Phone a Friend, not sure which. He lives about ten minutes from DW and has long white hair and a beard in case anyone should run into him. Very friendly and nice man.

I plan to start answering the questions online out loud and practice up for my next attempt. LOL

gigi1313, you are very welcome. If anything changes, I'm still planning on being available that day for ladysoleil and a couple of other people, so it won't be a problem.

SlightlyGoofy, as I mentioned to gigi1313, I will be manning the phones on the 14th hoping that at least one of the people I'm on retainer for makes the Hot Seat. It is a long day, but I am always willing to make the committment to anyone that I can who loves the game as much as I do. If they ever change the eligibility rules, I'll be back in the hunt myself, but that doesn't appear too likely. Somehow "Deal or No Deal" just doesn't hold the same appeal to me, though I will consider trying out for it if it sticks around.

Rob

a little off-topic funny... my ds is a 3rd grader and in january they have their "big" state exams and they are predominently multiple choice... he has struggled w/the practice tests, so the other night, as soon as i made them into a game and gave him little ABCD cards to hold up as though he were playing wwtbam at mgm, he did great! and now that he knows to read it like the game, he's been acing them! i am sure his tests will go well... and as his reward for getting thru them, we're leaving as soon as they're done to head to the airport for wdw!

Rob, I find deal or no deal to be overly complicated. I can cope with the banker thing even though it is a computer doing all the work but all those ladies just standing around holding bags when a simple board would work just as well seems ridiculous to me but then I am a woman and might not enjoy their charms. LOL I will keep an eye out and see if you are called upon as a Phone a Friend. My friend who is going has come within two questions of winning the cruise and is a much less nervous person than I am so I have great hopes for her.

GIGI, what a wonderful idea. Whoever said that learning had to be boring? You would make a good teacher.

Hey Rob, Slightly Goofy, or any of you other Millionaire lovers (like me!),

I have been trying to get tickets for the taping for several weeks. The form just isn't working. I complete the form with my choices and "submit." Then it just gives me gobbly-gook back on a blank screen. Sheesh. Anyone else have this problem? Or did it work for you? (I'm talking about the form at millionairetv)

I'm planning on going bright and early to get a wristband. You never know. It's less than a 2 hour drive so it's worth it. We'll park and then walk over like someone else said. That's probably the best way.

On another note, I've never been in the hotseat. I was *so* bummed when I was #2 after the first fastest finger last weekend, though. Part of me didn't want to get in the hot seat b/c I was at the attraction solo--DH took our 4 yo to Honey I Shrunk Playground. One one-thousandth of a second. AAARRRRGGGH!

Any advice appreciated!

We'll be arriving at WDW on the 15th and were thinking about getting tickets for the taping that day.

Do you think it's worth it or will it be just too crowded and we'd be better off going to another park and avoiding MGM that day? I think it would be fun to see a taping, but if it's going to be super-crowded, we might just prefer to be elsewhere.

Are you trying to get tickets to the taping, or are you trying to be an actual contestant? I'm a bit confused- if you're trying to get on the show, you need to line up for a wristband. If you're trying to see the show, I think the info on the website says that any remaining tickets will be given away after the line-up is done.

I didn't sign up for tickets because I'm planning to line up early for a wristband to (hopefully) audition. :Pinkbounc

I don't think you can get tickets to attend tapings for the Walk In and Win Week episodes taping that Saturday. I believe the audience will only consist of people who have come with the intent of getting into the Hot Seat and subsequently selected as potential contestants by the show coordinators.

As for the other tapes dates around that Saturday (Thursday, Friday, and Sunday), those tickets should be obtainable through the Millionairetv website.

MillionaireAddict, if you would like me to try to get tickets through the millionaire site for you, PM me the information that is requested on their webpage and I'll enter it to see if I have any better luck. I don't want to request them myself as there is no way that I can go and I may not receive the tickets in time to mail them onto you.

SlightlyGoofy,

Glad to hear you made the Hot Seat again. I was hearing a lot of rumors for awhile about the show closing, but it appears to at least be there through March now as they will be taping the show in January and ESPN Weekend is in March. I'm planning to play again in late March, so hopefully it will at least be there that long. Did you by chance hear anything while you were there that would indicate they will or won't be there much longer? Are they still announcing a certain 8 year old girl's win before the show? Oh, and I believe that GSN will be rerunning my appearance within the next month. I'll try to remember to warn you before it airs.

ladysoleil,

January 14th will be here soon. Do we need to talk strategy or anything before it gets here?

Rob
I was there last week and yes they are still talking about the eight year old girl.I made it into the Hot Seat and made it to the 500,000 point question!IT WAS SO EXCITING!Were you on the show with Regis or Meredith? How did you do?Once you have received a wrist band for Walk In And Win and your number has been called out,how do they select people for the Hot Seat out of the group?I am trying to decide if it would be worth a weekend trip to WDW to try out. Also, how hard is it to be selected for Meredith's regular show? Thanks. :)

Actually, I'd like to do both. I'd like to go to a taping but I'm also planning on waiting for a wristband. I understand it, as Rob said, that there are no tickets for taping on Sat. They are two separate events.

Thanks for the offer, Rob. I'll PM you. They might just not have any tix left and that's why I'm getting a funny response.

They mentioned the 8 yo girl once in the 7 shows I attended last weekend. That's so cool. Did you know her?

Congratulations on a great run! I was on the show with Regis. If you have GSN (formerly Game Show Network), you should be able to see my show re-air in approximately 3 weeks in the 8 pm rotation, so I won't spoil things for you by posting the result here.

Everyone that receives the wrist band and makes it into the audience will be interviewed. That interview will ultimately determine whether you are chosen for the Hot Seat or not. It is based on criteria that I'm not privy to, but basically you want to stand out in some way without coming off too fake. If you are an "over the top" type personality, you'd probably be better off trying to get on The Price is Right, for instance. However, if you are more of a wallflower that reads alot, you probably won't get picked either. I know that doesn't help much, but hopefully it does a little.

As suggested above, that is a tough question. It really has to do with what the Millionaire staff is looking for on any given day. I'm sure there are quotas involved, such as how many women vs. men, old vs. young, etc. All you can do is your best. Try to come off personable, make good eye contact, and so on. Good luck!

You could say that. She is my daughter. Being that she is under ten years old, she was allowed to bring either her mother or father down to assist her. She chose me. :)

I have seen streamers fall from the rafters twice at WWTBAM-PI!. The first time I saw it happen, I had the best seat in the house. :cool1:

Rob

WEDWDW, what was the date you were in the Hot Seat? We saw someone make the half million mark and are wondering if it was you. If so, I was first on the board after you. Were you the newly engaged man whose other half was sitting in the seat across the aisle from me? Just curious. There was a young school teacher who did quite well also. Next to me winning, seeing someone else make it would make my day!!!

I have read that women have an edge in getting on game shows, that require skill, because fewer of them apply or qualify. Not sure why that is since I personally know an awful lot of smart women. Not taking anything away from the guys as I feel it is probably an equal ability thing overall.

They often have audtions for Jeopardy in Indpls Rob. Have you ever tried out for that? I do not think I would have much of a chance on that as it is much harder than Millionaire and some of the other game shows where you win stuff would not interest me as I do not want to pay taxes of things I do not want.

Sounds if the OP got their question answered and since I do not know much about it I could not have answered that anyway. I feel their pain in being a fraction of a second too late. Been there, done that but have gotten over it with all the great hints I have learned here.

Well...I've taken the written test for the show twice. In theory, it's not hard, you sign up for tickets to a taping and go in and take the test, then you do an interview from there to be picked or not. In actuality, well, um...yeah, I'm finding it a bit tough.

I haven't passed the test yet- the first time I completely psyched myself out and changed some of my answers- to the wrong ones, as it happened. I spent a few hours googling and then kicking myself after that one. Lesson learned: trust your first instincts.

The second time, I got thrown badly by a math question that I think made the whole house of cards collapse, because it threw me off my game and freaked me out completely. I'm miserably mathematically challenged. Some people say they're bad at math, but for me, that's the understatement of a lifetime! ;)

I think if I keep chipping away at it, I'll make it through the test if I don't get on during Walk In and Win Week. I just have to be patient and keep trying, and do what I can to prepare in the interim. At this point, even if I don't ever make the show, I feel like I have to pass that test just as a personal victory. I am not easily discouraged...my husband calls me stubborn, I prefer the term "determined". ;)

I work in NYC though, so I can more or less go for it as much as I want, work schedule and free time permitting. If you're in NYC or can get there for a taping, I think it's worth doing. At the bare minimum, it's a fun way to spend an afternoon, and Meredith Viera is really fun to watch- she's got a lot more personality than you see on the show, that's for sure! I think she's very funny and talented and I enjoy watching the tapings. I liked Regis too, but Meredith is cool in a totally different way. I hope I get to meet her one of these days.

Thanks for the information. If I understand correctly, only about 1 in 3 people are selected from the initial group, and then, assuming 3 people per show, only about 1 in 20 people from that group would be selected for the Hot Seat.Since I just returned from a week at WDW,considering those odds,I just don't think I can justify a special trip.I think I will just wait and if they do another WIAW day in the future, possibly just plan an entire vacation including that day.I don't get GSN,so could you give a hint as to how you did-good,very good, great, extra great, etc. ;)

It sounds like you have things figured out pretty well. Keep in mind that the 1 in 3 part is random while the Hot Seat selection is decidedly not. So if you are good at wowwing them at an interview, your odds may be better than you calculated. At any rate, best of luck whether you try this time around or wait until next year. I believe this is their third Walk In and Win Week and they have all been taped at roughly the same time of year, so maybe you can plan for January 2007.

As to my run, I suppose you might rate it as very good. I tried to PM you a link to video of the show, but I couldn't get the PM to go through for some reason.

Yes, twice. The first time, the night before the test my DS woke us up gasping for air. It turns out that he had strep throat and his throat was swelling shut. We had to take him to the hospital and spent about 5 hours there, so I went in with little or no sleep.

The second time, I have no excuse but my own ignorance. They give one tough test. The Millionaire one can be tough too, but somehow my mind seems to function much better in multiple choice mode than short answer mode, at least at rapid speed.

Rob

Blueeyes101817, the show should air in roughly 3 weeks. As it gets closer, I should be able to give you a more accurate date.

In the meantime, I sent you the link via PM.
