In its second week out, Harry Potter was out-gerbalized by G-Force, $32 million to $30 million. How embarrassing for Universal -- they couldn't even hold on to #1 for two weeks. And I won't tell you who produced G-Force. I think you already know the answer to that. Passing fad is right.

$30 million is hardly chump change. When was the last Disney (not Pixar) movie to reach that total?

Comparing G-Force to Harry Potter? Kind of a bad choice...it's getting very near the end of summer break. Parents are rushing to anything for kids. You can't ever accuse Disney of being stupid...they know marketing.

I adore Disney...I'm moving to Orlando because I want to work with Disney...but G-Force...well...they've made better movies.

Sadly most of them were over 20 years ago.

Long term my dear....long term. I have no doublt that HP has longer legs (though not as MANY legs) than the G force.

At least we agree on one thing: Disney is the best at films, theatre, television and most of all, theme parks. No matter what our differences, at least we agree on that.

Also, don't you think the Internet is a wonderful place to communicate? Such a great tool. You can have all these different handles and most people (hint, hint) never see more than one. But you can be sure, I'm always around.

I think Condormans' point was HP DOESN'T have the long term draw that many people are arguing considering it can be beat out in only it's second week by a rather average film.
And the same thing will happen in the parks. Huge draw at first, but will quickly lose it's appeal as soon as something else comes along.

Well, the something new coming along could be at US or WDW. As far as the rumoured Fantasyland refurb, the same rumours were going around about Adventureland just 6 months ago -- it was supposed to be rethemed as a pirate-land. Apparently that is no longer happening.

As for WWHP, I have no doubt that if the rides are good people will continue to enjoy that space many years from now -- they did enjoy riding Dueling Dragons before it was rethemed. It will be at least as good after being rethemed. As for the fact that the books are now finished, and therefore there are a limited number of movies left, I'm not sure this will be the case. JK Rowlings has hinted that the great Albus Dumbledore had a very exciting life before becoming headmaster at Hogwarts -- it wouldn't surprise me at all if new books were written (and therefore new movies made) for many years to come (ala the Star Wars series -- if you can't keep going forward, you go to the past). I thought that was what this thread was originally about.

I don't really understand the tone of many posters on this thread, which is why I have stayed away from it. They are intent on seeing WWHP fail even though it has yet to open -- I for one don't think the box office sales for one week of a new movie have much to do with how good the theme park will be (we won't be seeing the new HP in theatres -- reviews are that it is very "dark" and not necessarily appropriate for kids -- we'll wait for the video as will our friends), and I don't think it is the movies that necessarily make the theme park interesting (although they do introduce new fans to the series, and maybe generate some interest there) because if the rides suck, it really doesn't matter how good the movie is. Afterall, POTC was just a ride for many years before there was even 1 movie -- nobody would have called that a passing fad, even as the technology was becoming outdated, just because there was no great new movie to draw people in.

Wouldn't it be just fine if WWHP was great AND WDW was putting in new attractions that didn't have Stitch in them?
