Who loves food? This girl! My May 2009 dining reviews, with pics! Updated 6/23!

We arrived for our ADR a good hour and a half early. We thought we would kill some time on the Boardwalk but that got old really quick. We headed over to Cape May and inquired if it would be possible to be seated earlier than our ADR. The CM at the podium although very busy was friendly and helpful. He informed us that it would be a bit of a wait but he could get us in earlier than our original time. He handed us a beeper and told us the range of it and that we were welcome to wait at the Martha's Vineyard Lounge down the hall.

We headed down and ordered some drinks. I had a Bud Light and Anthony had a Tom Collins. There was only one other couple in the lounge so it was a very nice and relaxing wait. We sipped our drinks and watched ESPN news for about a half an hour and our buzzer went off.

We were seated right next to the buffet which is always a plus in my book :banana:. Since we are not seafood people [odd place to book but I went for the flan] we can't really comment on that aspect of the buffet. Our waitress, Eileen, was fabulous. She was friendly, funny, kept our drinks full and promptly cleared our plates. She was fantastic.

We tried all of the non seafood items including the children's section. What can I say we have a refined pallet :rotfl2:. There was chicken which I don't recall how it was cooked but it was very moist and good. BBQ ribs which for me are never bad. It's like pizza for some people, even when it's bad it's still pretty good.

They also had this sausage that was cooked in this tomato, green pepper sauce that was delicious. It reminded me of my mom's cooking, and she was a PHENOMENAL cook. There were also the usual mashed potatoes, rolls, corn on the cob, mac and cheese and chicken nuggets. We enjoyed all of it. Everything was cooked perfectly and seasoned very well. They were very diligent in promptly replacing buffet items that had run out. Everyone was working hard.

On to the desserts. We tried key lime tarts, which if you like key lime pie, were very good. Oreo Bon bons, which were just OK. Cookies, which were good. We passed on the German chocolate cake due to the coconut in the frosting The two biggest standouts, for opposite reasons, from the dessert bar were the cupcakes and the flan. The cupcakes were terrible. They tasted like they were being stored in the closet with the cleaning products.

Now onto the highlight of the meal which was the flan. For those of you who have never heard of it, flan is a caramel custard and it's a piece of heaven:cloud9::cloud9:. It has been my favorite dessert since I was a little girl and boy did this one deliver. It was out of this world delicious. I had two huge pieces. I had to speak to a manager so they can pass on to whoever made the flan that it completely knocked my socks off. Flan can and often goes horribly wrong [ask Bongo's at Downtown Disney] but I am in love with whoever made this one:lovestruc

We absolutely loved Cape May and cannot wait to return.

We made an ADR at Chef Mickey's because...umm...well I don't really remember why. :)

We arrived 15 minutes before our ADR to find a huge line for check in. It took about 10-15 minutes until we were all checked in. We skipped on the family photo and just sat down in the waiting area. After about 20 minutes we were led to our table at the back of the restaurant overlooking the buffet.

Our server took quite a while to appear and when he finally did he looked like he hated his life. He wasn't rude but definitely not friendly. He was not a happy camper. The restaurant much like the food was a hot mess. There was food all over the floor, it was filthy. I didn't use the restrooms but I couldn't imagine they were fairing any better.

We headed up to the buffet and here is what we ended up with:

4249_555056201106_34506768_32888983_5746564_n.jpg

This is Anthony's plate. It consisted of Roast Beef, Mac and Cheese, cheese tortellini, I believe, pizza and Parmesan mashed potatoes.

4249_555056206096_34506768_32888984_5548175_n.jpg

I had the tortellini, mac and cheese, turkey with gravy, chicken nuggets, and Parmesan potatoes.

We have never been so disappointed in a meal. Anthony pretty much hated everything on his plate including the pizza [pizza is his favorite]. He said it all just tasted gross.

I can agree with him for the most part. The tortellini kind of tasted like dirt, the turkey and gravy were OK, the nuggets were dry. The potatoes were really good. I liked them a lot. The mac and cheese was a complete disgrace. It tasted like they had been made with dirty dishwater. So gross.

One more thing that did actually taste good:

4249_555056211086_34506768_32888985_4743284_n.jpg

A roll and corn muffins. Kind of hard to mess that up.

For dessert we had:

4249_555056216076_34506768_32888986_1610359_n.jpg

Which Anthony enjoyed, but I found to be a too icy for my taste.

4249_555056226056_34506768_32888988_7404314_n.jpg

The cookie was ok, the mickey dome was too rich, not really my style. The krispie treat tasted stale and I don't remember what the square thing was but I didn't finish it.

Finally this was my last resort:

4249_555056231046_34506768_32888989_6405130_n.jpg

Resse's Pieces, gummy bears and plain M&M's. Even then the darn M&M's tasted stale. I was so sad. Thankfully, our waiter, Sunshine McRainbow, came by with this to save the end of the meal.

Our anniversary cupcake:) Mickey's head was delicious.

The characters were moving at a glacial pace so we only got pics with Minnie, Donald and Goofy but they were really great. We enjoyed them a lot.

We will not be returning to Chef Mickey's for dinner, it was the worst food that whole trip. Maybe we will try it for breakfast next time.

That's so sad about Chef Mickey! I haven't eaten there in a long time. Hopefully they clean up their act (and the floor!)!

I'm glad the food was good at Cape May. We're headed there in July. I'll have to try the flan; I've never tasted it before.

So sorry that you didn't like Chef Mickey's. I am going for dinner in August and hope it is good.

Enjoying your reviews. I can't wait to go back to Tutto's in September. :goodvibes

Great reviews!

I agree with you on th chocolate pudding gloop in Peco Bills - YUCK!

You have sold me on the cape May buffet - I just love flan!

Wow - that is so different from what we found there. We enjoyed almost everything we ate. I wonder if it is a timing thing: we had the first seating at dinner. Or maybe your surly waiter set the tone for your evening. I know everyone has different tastes, too, so maybe that accounts for it. I didn't try the Mickey ravioli but both the kids liked it (though, they also enjoy Chef Boyardee, so you can't go by them...:rotfl:); they were mixed on the mac and cheese- DS liked it, DD didn't. Loved the potatoes.

I agree with you on the Mickey Mousse bombe or whatever it is...that thing is menacingly rich.

I'm sorry you had such a terrible experience. We don't really like the atmosphere at all, but enjoyed our dinner. We'd probably do it again, but won't consider it a "must-do".

I am so sorry about Chef Mickeys, we had the same experience when we went...my nieces did not like any of the food, it was all blech...while the character interaction was fantastic and they did make a big deal out of my birthday (more for the girls than me) we would not go back for dinner...breakfast though is excellent, we were very surprised by how much we loved it

lol, yeah that floor was atrocious. Thanks for reading!

Some people have an issue with the texture, some like my hubby think it taste like eggs too much. I hope you like it. :)

It really seems to be hit or miss. Some people really loved it, others would have rather had McDonald's. I hope you hit them on a good night.

Lucky! :)

Anthony wouldn't even try the pudding! He could tell just by the look of it was gross. I should have listened :rotfl:

I'm Dominican and I have been eating flan my whole life and I can tell you the flan at Cape May is in my top 2 of best flans ever.

Chef Mickey's dinner really seems to a matter of personal taste, more so than a lot of restaurants I think. Case in point are your children who had the exact same thing on the same day and had diverging opinions on it.

Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts. :goodvibes

I think I might try and talk hubby into breakfast because I really did enjoy the characters very much and I have only heard good things about the breakfast.

Coming up tonight we have Pop Century Pizza Delivery, Pop food court breakfast and lunch [pics] and the Old Port Royale food court breakfast and lunch.

Once again a big thank you to everyone that is reading and/or posting.:wizard:

I am so glad we have not give CM a 2nd try. We did it on our first trip in 2005 and while DS loved the character interaction DH and I did not feel it was one of the cleanest places. We are usually not very picky and love almost everywhere we have eaten at Disney. But, I just dont think I could do it again.

Hello everyone,

Let's dive right in.

We were at Caribbean beach for the last two nights of our trip and wished we had stayed here instead of Pop. We checked out the food court for breakfast and lunch.

For breakfast I ordered the Mickey Waffle with bacon which was phenomenal, it barely needed any syrup. The bacon was good albeit a bit greasy. Anthony ordered the french toast with bacon. After eating a slice of french toast he decided he did not like it. I had already eaten the ears off my Mickey waffle but I offered a trade as I am not particularly picky about my french toast. It was just ok, a bit soggy but not inedible. All in all I found the breakfast to be pretty decent.

We also tried the food court for lunch. Anthony ordered the Philly Cheesesteak and I ordered the Turkey BLT sandwich. The Philly cheesesteak was not greasy at all and it came in a lovely fresh baguette, it was really good, especially compared to the debacle at POP as you will soon see.

The turkey BLT came on toasted multi grain bread and it was huge. It had some kind of cranberry dressing which had whole cranberries in it. I didn't particularly care for them but they were easy enough to pick out and the dressing itself really added a nice spicy zip to the sandwich. I liked it a lot. Both sandwiches came with a choice of potato chips or pasta salad. We both went with chips and unfortunately the only option was plain Lay's. For dessert Anthony had a cupcake and I had a sugar cookie. Standard food court dessert but oh so delicious. We really enjoyed the food court at Caribbean beach and it's one of the main reasons CBR is on our list of potential resorts for next trip.

We ordered pizza on our arrival night around 8:30 pm. We were starving, really tired and really far from the food court. We ordered a large cheese, a 2 liter bottle of soda and the chocolate cake.

The delivery took FOREVER. OK it was 45 minutes but when you're so hungry that you're dizzy that can seem like forever. The pizza was the same Disney pizza. Thick dough, mild sauce. It was 10 times more delicious than it actually was because we were so hungry. Still, I couldn't manage more than two slices [I can usually knock out half a large] the dough was just too heavy. The cake was just your regular pre-packaged chocolate cake which was fine. The likely hood of ordering pizza delivery again is probably zero. I'm just not a huge fan of Disney pizza.

We tried the Everything Pop food court for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Our first stay at POP was in 2004 and I don't recall anything awful about the food, in fact if I remember correctly I thought we really liked it [especially the red velvet cake they used to have]

Our first morning we were very excited to get Mickey Waffles with bacon. They had POP waffles with bacon so I figured they were made with the same batter as Mickey waffles and oh how wrong I was. The waffle wasn't bad but the batter just didn't taste the same as a Mickey waffle. It didn't seem as sweet. I don't know if maybe it was just in my head because of the waffle design but I didn't enjoy it. Plus, the bacon tasted funny and it was salty.

Next we tried lunch. I got chicken nuggets, same as the ones you can get everywhere, they were very good. Anthony got the cheese steak wrap. I don't know how long it had been sitting but the thing was so greasy it was barely edible. The bottom of the wrap was just soaked in grease. It was disgusting.

Finally we tried dinner. Anthony ordered the chicken penne alfredo which I forgot to photograph. When he first cut into it and took a bite he thought it was undercooked. I looked at it and it did look slightly pink. He took it up to the station he got it from and they told him it the way they cooked it gave it that color, that it was fine. He came back ate it and enjoyed it. I stole a few bites and it was really good. The chicken was nice and crispy and the alfredo sauce was good.

I ordered the vegetable Lo Mein:

4249_555056071366_34506768_32888958_930810_n.jpg

I thought it was pretty good, a little greasy but I enjoyed it.

For dessert I got a chocolate chip cookie:

4249_555056076356_34506768_32888959_5064040_n.jpg

and Anthony got a cupcake:

Both standard, yet delicious food court fare.

Overall, I liked the food offered at the Everything Pop food court but I definitely liked the choices at the CBR food court better. I think this trip spelled the end of our value resort days.

Tune in next time for Wolfgang Puck Express and Shutters with pics!

Is Shutters coming up?

Im waiting. :rolleyes1 Not so patiently. :lmao:

I know, I'm such a slacker! :guilty:

Sorry for the delay guys, had a long, busy weekend. I promise to have the next review up tonight. Thanks to everyone that has been following this. :hippie:

And we're back!

Wolfgang Puck Express is by far my favorite CS restaurant. I have never had a bad meal there.

We once again were able to beat the lunch rush, otherwise we might have had to sit outside. I mean who doesn't enjoy eating outside in a blazing inferno?

This time around I ordered the Margarita [sp?] pizza. It was delicious. The tomato, the cheese, the crust. So good!

Anthony ordered the spaghetti and meatballs. He was pretty disappointed as the sauce didn't taste like a traditional "red" sauce. It was very herby if that makes sense. I tasted it and I could see what he meant. It wasn't gross by any means just not what one was expecting.

For dessert we both ordered frozen yogurt. I got vanilla with chocolate chip cookie pieces and Anthony ordered chocolate with chocolate chips. Both flavors were very good.

Even with the issue with the spaghetti [which technically wasn't their fault] we will definitely continue to eat here on subsequent trips.

Loving your dinning review. We feel the same as you about Chef Mickey (bad fod, place was a mess and very loud) but my son loved the character interaction. My son wants to go back at this place so with MickeyNikie suggestion to go at breakfast so hopefully breakfast will be better.
Thanks for sharing your review.:)

Shutters was on the last night of our trip and we ended up eating here only because we were completely lazy. We originally had a dinner ADR at Crystal Palace but in the early afternoon we just decided we had enough of the crowds and just humanity in general :lmao:

We headed to the concierge desk and canceled Crystal Palace [at which the CM was horrified, which I found amusing] and made and ADR at Shutters. I was really apprehensive since I never recalled hearing good things about this place but I am glad we tried it.

We arrived for our ADR and waited about 10 minutes to be seated. We were sat and met our waiter who was very friendly and attentive. I thought he had a used car salesman vibe to him but Anthony didn't think so.

We started off with drinks since it was our last night. I got the Caribbean Smuggler:

4249_555056280946_34506768_32888998_2939104_n.jpg

It's Captain Morgan, Malibu, cranberry juice, and pineapple juice. It was absolutely delicious.

Anthony ordered the Southern Hurricane

4249_555056285936_34506768_32888999_831324_n.jpg

This one is Southern Comfort, orange juice, pineapple juice, and Grenadine. He enjoyed it very much. I found the prices of the drinks to be pretty reasonable. They were both under $7.50.

We also received a basket of some kind of sourdough bread, with a cilantro butter.

4249_555056275956_34506768_32888997_6749984_n.jpg

I was really excited because I LOVE cilantro. Unfortunately, it was more of a garlic butter, than cilantro butter which was a shame. The bread was a little more sour than what I usually like but I ate it anyway.

For our entrees we both ordered the char crusted New York Strip with a pico sauce on top. It was served with a baked potato and sweet plantains, Anthony got double potato since he does not like plantains.

4249_555056290926_34506768_32889000_4687626_n.jpg

OK, the presentation looks borderline disgusting. The food was amazing. I was shocked by how good it was. The steak was absolutely perfectly cooked and well seasoned and the pico sauce really added a little extra to it. Anthony dubbed the steak better than the fillet at Le Cellier. This steak was indeed very good, but let's not go crazy here. :rotfl2:

For dessert Anthony ordered the chocolate cake:

4249_555056300906_34506768_32889001_8309180_n.jpg

He deemed it delicious and finished the whole thing.

I ordered the Tres Leches:

4249_555056310886_34506768_32889003_2133209_n.jpg

This is cake soaked in three different kinds of milk [evaporated milk, condensed milk, and heavy cream] I had never had it before and I was blown away by how good it was. For people with texture issues it could be a little weird. The taste makes up for any short comings in texture though. It was sweet, but not overly sweet. Almost like and oatmeal taste first that progresses to cake. I loved it.

I really thought we were going to walk into a debacle trying to call itself dinner at Shutters but it was one of the best meals we have ever had on property. We are planning a return trip to Shutters on future vacations

Yumma-licious!!

Shutters is the first night of our August trip and now I cant wait. I think I will need one of each of those drinks then I will have the steak. After that me and that chocolate cake have got a date.:thumbsup2

Thanks so much for your reviews I have really enjoyed them.
