I know he is a businessman, entrepreneur. What kind of business does he run?

It's just strange. I hear his name a lot in the media, but no one actually states what he does.

Briefly and basically, Soros made his billions trading currencies. He is controversial in many nations because some believe he was responsible for causing currencies to collapse. I know in parts of Asia he is not welcome because of the 1990s Asian currency crisis. In the UK he is not well thought of either. My understanding is Soros is thought to be involved in 4 currency crisis. And right now with the US in bad shape economically, and QE2 begun, people are concerned Soros has America's currency in his cross hairs.

Also here in the US, Soros is controversial for funding many left wing activists groups. In one of my favorite papers, Investors Business Daily, a few articles have been written about him and his funding - for example:

Thanks everyone.

I'm going to research him. I did see where he was controversial. Interesting fellow.

I know 2 separate guys that have been fund managers for him - when you are making him gobs of money, you are a highflying golden boy. If you lose him money, you are gone.

Insider trading conviction

In 1988, he was asked to join a takeover attempt of the French bank Société Générale. He declined to participate in the bid but later bought a number of shares in the company. French authorities began an investigation in 1989, and in 2002 a French court ruled that it was insider trading, a felony conviction as defined under French securities laws, and fined him $2.3 million, which was the amount that he made using the insider information.

Punitive damages were not sought because of the delay in bringing the case to trial. Soros denied any wrongdoing and said news of the takeover was public knowledge.[32]

His insider trading conviction was upheld by the highest court in France on June 14, 2006.[33] In December, 2006 he appealed to the European Court of Human Rights, claiming that the 14-year delay in bringing the case to trial precluded a fair hearing

Unfortunately I think he was!

George Soros is pretty cool and has a great philanthropic organization, that supports democracy and human rights in over 60 countries. How neat is that!

And he's collapsed country's currencies. How cool is that?

I knew him in the 90's investment guy- hedge fund kind of $$(think fast trading-) He was a big wig back then- I met him a few times and he was very to himself- unusual in the finance world. He kept to himself in big crowds. But he was respected back then.

I read about that. How many has he had a hand in?

I had it bookmarked on my other computer but it crashed. Just now i tried to Google it and all I see are posts about that moron, Glenn Beck who apparently has been having tv shows about Soros.

Hedge fund manager I believe. I used to work at a hedge fund - RIDICULOUS amount of $$$$$. Other than that I don't know what he does.
