Well, I seem to be quite long winded when I "tell" a story, so I have to break some of the days out into multiple parts......
Day 2 Sunday, June 17th (Part 1)
We had absolutely nothing planned for today. I figured that we would all be pretty tired from the long drive, that we could take this day and just relax
well
.thats just not our style
.
So, I ask the fellow at the front desk of the Embassy Suites a couple of questions. Where are some good places for dinner, and what should we go and see that isnt the Grand Canyon (we have plans to go there tomorrow)? He suggests we go to the Snow Bowl. Flagstaff is at the foothills of the highest point in Arizona. They are called the San Francisco Peaks. And there is a ski resort there. And during the off season, you can take one of the ski lifts up to the top of one of the mountains.
So, off we go to the Snow Bowl. It is only about half an hour drive up the mountain to get there. It is such a beautiful drive up the mountain. We see a lot of people riding bikes up the road. I cannot even imagine trying to ride up that hill!!
So, we arrive at the ski lodge and we have to wait around for about 10 minutes before we can buy our tickets to go up the mountain. It is about 70 degrees at the lodge.
Courtney sees the ski lifts and gets scared. She does not want to go up. We try to tell her that she will be very safe and that it will be okay. But she does not want to go.
Now
I ask how long it takes to get up to the top of the hill and then back down. It takes half an hour each way. Well, after some discussion, we decide that DW and Courtney will stay at the bottom while the boys and I go up first. DW and Courts will
what else
..shop. Before we start up, we buy a blanket because we are told the temperature at the top of the mountain is a brisk 60 degrees. We are all in T-shirts and shorts, and while I dont mind a little cool weather
Chase does not.
Well, we hop on the ski lift and head up. You get a fantastic view of the mountain and the surrounding area on the way to the top.
Once at the top, you can walk around and can get a little glimpse of the Grand Canyon which is a good 50 miles away.
We dont stay at the top long, because I hated that we left DW and Courts behind. So, we take a few pictures and head back down.
When we get back down, we try to convince Courtney to go, but she still isnt interested. So, DW and Chase go while Courts, Colton, and I stay behind. By this time, the lodge was serving lunch and Colton and Courtney were hungry and I was parched. So, the kids had a chicken finger (do they?) basket and I had a Tecate. After our snack, Colton and Courtney went exploring in the nearby woods with some other kids that were around.
DW and Chase came back down the mountain a little while later. They stayed at the top of the mountain a little longer than the boys and I did. They listened to the Ranger at the top talk about how the mountains were formed it was really a dormant volcano. Everyone had a good time. And just as we were deciding to leave, Courtney gets sad because she says she now isnt scared and would like to go. Well, a little too late now
.
Day 2 Part 2 coming later....
