Who has gone from cable back to dial-up and didn't go crazy?

I am cancelling my RoadRunner service today. I just HAD to have it before because of my online gaming addiction, but I don't play those games anymore. Now the cost just doesn't seem worth it to me. I have had RR for a couple of years now and I'm afraid I will go absolutely bonkers going back to dial-up.

I've decided I need a vacation more than I need high-speed access and all of the money I save is going in my Disney fund. I am even dropping down to basic cable. I am starting to plan a 10 day trip for November!

Is there anyone out there that can reassure me about this? Will I adapt or will I call my cable company and beg them for my cable modem back?

Also, am I the only person that almost looks forward to depriving myself out of things just to go to WDW?? I live a simple life as it is. I don't go out and I don't even rent movies very often, yet I am looking for more things to cut out of my budget just to get there faster!

I now have Cable modem and can't imagine going back to dial up. I understand completely the reason why you are sacrificing it though. My mom has a dinosaur computer and is on dial up. I tried to use hers the other day and it absolutely made me crazy. It took forever to sign on and 3 days to pull up a website. I finally gave up and signed off. I think since you are doing it for a good cause, you will adjust to it just fine. I use mine for downloading music mostly, but it makes a world of difference when you don't have to wait an eternity for webpages to load. Good luck!! Just keep reminding yourself that it's all for DISNEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ouchhhhhhhhh that hurts!!!
You can take anything away from me but if you take my cable internet I will kill someone!
Honestly my cable company charges $5 more a month that what my dialup would charge, not worth it for me.
I only pay $30 a month for my cable modem service , dialup is @ $22 plus tax here a month.
Good luck and I hope the withdrawls are not too serious, I know I would be in agony.

I did go back to dial up once... for three weeks... then we went back to cable modem access (just had to get it installed after moving). Honestly even for simple things like web browsing and sending larger e-mails, I could not imagine going back to dial up permanantly. I had to go back when our cable went out for 1.5 weeks and I swear it was awful. There is no comparison. I can understand that you want to save money but fortunately for us, cable is much more cost effective than 2 additional phone lines and dial up access. Good luck getting used to dial up again :)

Wow that's cheap. I pay $45 for RoadRunner and about $41 for cable. I don't even get any movie channels! I just found a dial-up service that has a local number for 7.99 a month and basic cable (first 12 channels I think) is around $10. I'm not worried about the channels I will be losing, but I really love my cable modem. I wish I could just get basic cable and keep the RR, but they don't let you do that. You have to have a "package" in order to have it.

That's a savings of $68 a month! I love RR, but I think I can live without it. Once I get past my withdrawal period that is. :D

Also, RR is the only high-speed access available here.

Are you sure about that? We have NO cable, and get RoadRunner here in Wisconsin. I wouldn't think the rules are drastically different in different states, as it's the same company.

Granted we do pay $10 more a month for Roadrunner cause we don't have cable, but it's worth it.

Do like what we did - come up with a business reason for it (DW does consulting) and it's tax deductible at the end of the year. Even if we didn't have that option, I think I'd give up a lot of other things before giving up Roadrunner.

I have cable access at work, and dial-up at home.

If I'm trying to view pictures, hear music, watch videos, I'd rather do it at work.

Just surfin' around at home is fine - you just need another hobby while you're waiting for some sites to load. :teeth:

(It's not that bad, really...) :)

I went from cable back to AOL. It's really not that bad, unless I'm downloading something and then I really notice the difference. I cancelled the cable when we switched to Directv, I was going to use DSL but we're moving soon. I figured I'd wait till we move and then go back to cable or to DSL.

For just surfing it's really not that bad at all. If saving the $$ is important to you then go for it.

In the past year, hubby and I have tried to find ways to save money - cancelling my DSL was one of them.

I really don't miss it much. I don't do stuff on the 'net that requires it. Sure, it takes a teensy bit of patience to get used to dialup again, but with my earthlink dialup, I usually connect at about 52K.

I work from home on my computer all the time, and I really don't mind the dialup. You'll be ok.

We also gave up cable television, and our marriage has improved by leaps and bounds - we just never watch the old boob tube anymore! We get our news online, or connect the rabbit ears for anything urgent. When I travel and turn on the TV in my hotel room, it's nice watching re-runs when they aren't re-runs to me!

It's amazing how you find ways to spend your time when not glued to technology....

I'm glad we got rid of both!!!

I wouldn't be able to do it. I like being spoiled, though. :p I hated being home for Christmas, checking email on a slooooooow computer on dial-up. It took forever! I couldn't even get pictures to download within a decent amount of time and gave up.
Heck, I even get frustrated at work when the network is slower! And when the laptop is slower in the living room on the wireless router.
But if it's a cost saver, I think you can do it. Just keep telling yourself it's for Disney...

That is why I never tried the dial-up when they offered it for free. I knew they would have me and frankly it would cut into my Disney fund!
