Who else has had the H1N1 vaccine? - update post 92 looks like my DD has the Flu.

Well, Dr thinks it's H1N1. Get this, the nose test came back neg. and he says he still thinks it H1N1, so I ask him for a better test and he tells me the State of PA won't accept ANY tests except from the sickest patients (I took it to mean hospitalized). So he SAYS Flu but the chart reads "Virus" because the very imperfect test didn't confirm it. No wonder the pros have zero knowledge of what is going on, uggghhh. So anyway DD10 is starting TamiFlu tonight. I asked for my DS11 as a hard to control Asthmatic and Dr gave me TamiFlu for him too, to be safe. As for me, I'm praying some of this is going to help..

It's been very frustrating getting any kind of consistency with this flu. My son wasn't swabbed for it at the doctor's office because this doctor said 'no fever, no flu'. Well, I was swabbed by a different doctor - with NO fever - and tested positive. Go figure. My kids' school nurse said that kids can come back 24 hours after being fever free, but our pediatrician told us to keep them home for 7 days, they're probably still contagious. It takes a lot of effort to stay informed and sift through all the contraidictory information out there.

Just received an automated phone call from our Health Dept. They will be offering the shot tomorrow from 11-2, or when the run out, whichever comes first.
My husband has pretty bad asthma, so he really needs this vaccine. He has chosen to go to a Wake Forest game tomorrow instead.

So DD10 has been a bit mushy starting yesterday. She still went to school and finished her basketball practice last night at 7:30-9. When she came in she said all the running gave her a headache so I gave her a Motrin and figured she'd be ok, no fever at all.

SO this morning I checked her temp and it was a teeny bit elevated at 99.5 with a small cough, but the mold is high so it looked like allergies to me. I gave her a Motrin and sent her into school. Then at about 10am my mommy senses were tingling so I picked her up to be safe and called the Dr for an appointment, 4 was the earliest. I let the Motrin wear off to see where her true fever is and that was a bad idea. At 2:45 she was running a fever of 103.6. I gave her another Motrin and put her in a lukewarm bath which only brought it down to 102.5, it usually works better than that... now I'm just waiting to get to the Dr to get her Flu medicine. BTW, she won't eat and is really lethargic, has a bit of a cough but nothing hurts and since she's already on Flovent her Asthma seems ok.. for now but you can bet I won't be leaving her side.

Since it was 2 weeks from the vaccine on Wed I guess I'll answer my own question about whether or not the vaccine helps fight it off because we're all test subjects in my house.

Usually with any kind of flu the symptoms come on very fast, not gradually as you explained your daughters symptoms. A lot of virus can cause high fever and it's not unusual for a child to have no or mild fever and then to have it spike in the afternoon and evening. Not saying it can't be the flu or anything, just doesn't sound like the way flu typically presents. I hope she's feeling better soon whatever it is! Sick kids are no fun for anyone!!!
If you have trouble getting the fever to lower before you can get her in, you can rotate tylenol and motrin, or even give both at the same time if you are really worried. My kiddos are prone to high fever, so unfortunately I have lots of experience with the tylenol/motrin technique!!

we chose to not vaccinate our kids. twin number one became ill last Sunday. and is just now feeling better. twin number 2 is sick for 1 days now. i ahve been sick for 4 days.

I have to say my pediatrician was not swabbing. but Insisted because we are leaving for Disney in 2 weeks and i want to know. Son number 1 was posetive in 33 seconds number 2 on Monday was negative, but now as of thursday clealry has it.
apparently if you swab at least here in MA and it's posetive they have to madate that the kid stays out 5 full days. if they don't swab you can go back after fever free. So right there is why we are having a pandemic. if they are catchey 5 full days SWAB ALL of them and mandate the 5 day quarantine.
kids next dootr had it went back after 2 days well now they are infecting everyone. it's so wrong!!!!!!
mandate the swab and if they are posetive a 5 days quarantine. pretty freaking simple.

It's good they gave you tamiflu just to be safe! My Mom's Dr. told her she had the flu, she ended up having to go to the hospital for Asthma and because she works there they did the test. It came back negative! I guess at this point if you don't get the test, it's really just the Drs best educated guess!

Completely agree! I have read that swine flu is different from ordinary viruses in that it is contagious for 5-7 days regardless of fever.
I think there are a lot of undocumented cases out there too. I'm pretty sure DD and I both had H1N1 this past week - but the doctor didn't want us to come in (fevers not high enough), so we have no test to know whether we have had this now or not.
Back to topic, we were not able to get the vaccine - very limited supply. Pediatrician said, "Don't call us, we'll call you" if you're high risk enough to get the vax. I was extremely nervous about DD who does have respiratory problems - but she didn't end up having breathing issues or secondary infection. Thank goodness.
