My DW and I are thinking about joining the DVC family and are trying to figure what Use Year would be best for us.

DW is a teacher and we plan on doing the majority of our vaca's in the month of August. What would be the best Use Year??

Thanks for your opinions.

When we purchased I had No idea that the use year mattered.

We told the guide that we usually travel in January and he gave us an August use year.

I'm glad he did because if we need to adjust our January vacation, we can still bank ALL of our points in December, which may happen this year.:(

If I were you I would probably try to get a February use year so if you had to cancel you could bank your points by July 31st, provided they are not already banked points that you are using, and the change is made 31+ days prior to your arrival.

Just the way I would do it.

Others may vary.

I'd suggest June. That way if you did have to cancel your August vacation, you would have plenty of leeway to bank or use the points again during the course of your use year.

Remember that use year has nothing to do with when you can make a reservation. That is always 11 months in advance of your trip at your home resort. It only matters for banking and/or if you have to cancel a trip.

I, too, would suggest a June use year under these circumstances. That gives you until November 30 to bank all your points each year, meaning if you chose to go at Christmas break you would still have until 30 days out to bank all your points if you needed to cancel and you would receive your point allocation just two months before your usual August trip each year.

If you would mostly travel in the Summer and Xmas, I'd agree with June. If you might travel Spring Break (more than Xmas), maybe Feb, March or April depending on when your spring break tends to be.

I too did not know that use year was really important when we bought. We have a Feb. use year. Although the only difference it has made to me is when I can borrow again for the next year!!
