Which stores will sell floor models/damaged display appliances?

2010 has been a terrible year for us, financially, so far!
*dh needed root canal plus 3 panoramic x-rays...not covered by insurance
*heater broke ($1250 to repair)
*garage freezer broke (It has been painful trying to fit food for 6 plus a daycare in our regular freezer)
*2 tires needed to be replaced
*losing all of my full-time daycare kids soon
*and now, our over the range microwave just broke

(Thanks for letting me vent about all of that)

Anyway...the freezer situation is driving me crazy. We don't have room to stock up on sale items. Everything falls out when I open the door. I have to clear out half of the freezer to find things. You get the picture.

I'd like to find a cheap fridge/freezer to replace the one in our garage. Do any of you know of a store that will sell floor models or models that have been damaged? I don't care about the size or color. It could be flourescent orange with dents everywhere, for all I care...as long as it works.

Any suggestions on where to find cheap appliances? I don't have a lot of time to drive from store to store, so if I know where to start, I'm sure I'll have better luck. And does anyone know if Costco sells fridges?

best buy sells outside damaged items. Discounted pretty decent.
Pretty sure Sears and Lowes do also.

What about craigslist or the newspaper?

abc warehouse has decent prices and they will haggle with you.

I'm having one of those weeks right now.
I normally keep 10-12 day care kids daily. Thanks to the snow this week, it was anywhere from 1-6. Topped off with DS needing a tooth extraction and filling ($120 for our portion) and the car getting repaired ($950). I hate weeks like this.
And I know what you are saying about the freezer situation. We have two refrid. (one in the house and my mother's 20yo beater in the garage). It's a struggle to keep a week's worth of groceries for the family and day care in there. I've been keeping an eye out for a used deep freeze for a while now myself. I'll find one eventually, but it seems like every time I hear of one advertised or see one on a yard sale, they are already spoken for.

To answer your original question:
We've purchased litely damaged items at Sears and Best Buy with no problems. I've seen them at HHGreg also. Good luck getting a bargain.

Have you looked for a Sears Outlet in your area? We got a fridge from there a few years ago for 50% retail with only a fingernail dent in it - and there were much more drastic markdowns on the ones that had serious cosmetic damage. Still probably more than a killer craigslist deal, but would come with a warranty.

I have seen damaged/floor model appliances at my Home Depot, a lot. I would suggest checking there. Our last freezer we got at Sam's Club.

Check out Sears online to see if there's an outlet in your area. We have a great one that sells scratch, dents & refurbs.

I hear ya about bad luck! I was rushing down the basement stairs to throw in laundry and fell and broke my leg badly. This was just before Christmas. Well a week later after I was home from the hospital, our dryer broke. It was pretty old and not a great brand but talk about timing. My kids found a Maytag at Home Depot that was marked down only because it was not selling on the floor for a while. I think we paid about $400 including tax. It is great! I now am able to scoot down the steps to do the laundry and finally see my new dryer!

We got our chest type freezer at Home Depot for about 40% off. It has a very small dent on the bottom that doesn't affect the performance.

Sears does, and I believe Home Depot does also. Our stove was a display/floor modes (Sears), and our fridge was also, it has a huge scratch down the side (the one that is against the wall anyway) and I think we got it at the Home Depot.

Hey OP, I grew up in Frederick!

I know Lowe's has them. If you go into the store on 355 and give the appliance guys your name, they may even be willing to call you when they get something that will work for you.

Also, it's a long shot, but Dirt Cheap has them on rare occasion. It's on Route 15 in Thurmont a few miles before the Mountaingate Restaurant.

I second (or third?) the Sears Outlet and hope you have one nearby. I have gotten a ton of my appliances there. It is all scratch and dent and the prices are great! Sometimes Lowes and Home Depot will have clearanced floor models out but those aren't as plentiful.

I just saw some floor model appliances marked down at my Lowe's a couple of days ago. I bought our over the range microwave from HH Gregg. We had to take the display model because that was the only one they had left, and they marked it down for us. What about a used appliance retailer? I live outside of Atlanta, and there is a store pretty close to us that only sells used appliances. I don't know what kind of a deal it would be, but it is an option.

We just bought a chest freezer from Lowes and are very pleased. I believe it was less than $300 with delivery.

We also looked in our Sears Outlet and they had quite a bit and decent prices. Just not the size we wanted.

If you do find a good store deal don't forget to check the internet for rebates.

I got an awesome floor model stainless Kitchenaid dishwasher for $599 which was a really good deal (it was in perfect condition). I found a $100 rebate and sent for it. It doesn't matter if you bought a floor model as long as you buy the correct rebate model. I got an $800 dishwasher for $499!

Don't forget the small local appliance shops. We have one near me that sells scratch and dents. I look there before I go anywhere else, but they were out of them when I was ready to buy.

I was going to go this route...until I realized that the cost to operate an old CL freezer is can be substantially higher than a newer, more energy efficient model.

Thank you all so much for the suggestions. It has been so long since we've needed to buy appliances, so I wasn't sure where to start. I never thought about hardware type stores (Lowes). Luckily, it's not something we need immediately, so I can try to maximize rebates, sales, or wait for the "perfect" model to have a dent Oh, I did check the Sears outlet, and there are none near me. That would have been perfect. I'll try to venture out of this snow and hit a few stores tomorrow!

I'm convinced that mid Nov before black Friday is the best time to buy appliances. When we purchased our home we were pricing out appliances and found the best prices in mid November. A lot of the sales prices were better then sale/outlet/clearance prices. I would also check craigslist as someone else posted and ask the for a manager when you go to purchase if your buying multiple items they may give you a better deal. You can always walk out and get a better deal elsewhere. When I bought my fridge I asked if the sales rep if he could do better then sticker price he knocked it down $50 dollars when I asked if he could do better he asked what price I wanted it for in the end I got $175 off sticker and free delivery and this was from best buy so you just never know its definitely worth asking and it doesn't hurt to ask what models are being discontinued or replaced. As for sears outlet when we prices them out for average priced items I thought they were priced high but when you price out higher end items the ones in the multi thousand dollar range stuff you dont see in there stores those are priced well. Like you'll find alot of european brand appliances at out local outlet that you dont see in sears or on there website and there priced well below. So in the end it depends on what your looking for.

Best Buy and Home Depot have worked for us. We generally buy our appliances as floor model, and are willing to accept some damage. DH generally negotiates from whatever they have it priced at, to get even deeper discounts. IThe key for us is that it still comes with the manufacturers warranty. That way, any trouble, and we can still call and have the manufacturer provide service.
