Which spur of the moment trip would YOU take?

We're thinking about taking a little "getaway" vacation... depends on some things but just curious to get some other's thoughts on this... trying to make a decision!

If you'd been to Cancun before but it was only 3 days (and started evening- ended morning so really ripped us off a day there LOL) and you didn't feel like you got to spend much time there...... 10yrs ago....

Would you choose 4 nights at Cancun at a 3 star all inclusive hotel- with price including transfer to/from airport (bus type trans) and several "all day" activities (snorkeling, horseback riding, etc.) -including one of them being a 6hr fishing experience that Dh would do alone thank you muchly LOL, airport parking/etc. but was about $500 more (not counting spending on souveniers, etc.)

OR

5 nights at Montego Bay Jamaica -also 3 star all inclusive hotel- with price including trans., airport parking, but only one little 2hr dinner cruise.... because the options given at this time do not suit my fancy, price about $500 less though.... new place we've never been... one extra day....

???
I can see pros/cons for each so that's why I'm having a hard time deciding. Maybe some of you have been to Jamaica AND Cancun and can tell me which YOU'D prefer? Because I've never been... don't know if I'll like it better or worse than Cancun. Any opinions?

Wish I had such a tough decision!

I've never been to either place. I think I'd make the decision on what type of vacation I wanted to have. If I was stressed and just wanted some time to unwind by the sea I'd take Jamaica because of the longer time and less activities - I'd come home more rested. If I wanted a more active vacation, then I'd choose Cancun.

Best wishes with your decision but they both sound very nice.

I've been to both, and it would just depend on how nice the resort is.

FYI, Cancun does in general have a much nicer beach, Jamaica has better shopping.

I've been to both (actually lived in Cancun when I worked for Club Med) and I'd pick Jamaica - I think it has more charm.

We've only been to Jamaica of those two, and it was a LONG time ago. We stayed over from Montego at Runaway Bay. It was very nice, but we were overwhelmed by the poverty we saw.

I may be the lone voice of dissent, but I would choose Cancun. Well I guess it would all depend on which resoprt though. Haven't styed in Cancun "proper" for quite a few years but we love the Riviera Maya section.

We have traveled extensively througout the Carribbean, and I will tell you Jamaica is the only place that I would not return. I personally did not like it, and really did not feel safe at all.
This may have changed, but from what I hear it has not. But I suppose if you are not planning to leave the resort at all, it may be alright. But if it were me, I would look at other options.

I've never been to either but have friends and family that have within the last 2 years.

Two of my SIL's have been to both and raved over Jamaica, but didn't particularly care for the way they were treated in Cancun.

So, based on that, I'd go for Jamaica before Cancun.

Cancun has changed quite a bit in the past 10 years or so-for the better , I think.

I would probably want to research each resort a bit more too. I love tripadvisor.com.

Montego Bay Jamaica, because it would be longer and I've never been there. I've been to Cancun.

I'm leaning more towards Jamaica. Just researching it various ways I've come up with a couple hundred less PLUS TWO EXTRA DAYS over Cancun- instead of just one. Also it's less activities but who wants to pay for all inclusive resort and then spend all your time gone from the resort? That's what we did last time and it seemed so stupid! We only slept there at the resort in Cancun- but paid for all inclusive.... we were such morons. LOL

Personally I'd rather have a "lazy" vacation, more days, less money... and get our money's worth out of the all inclusive we're paying for. DH doesn't care either way- but leans more towards Cancun - I think because last time the trip seemed so short and he'd enjoy the 6hr fishing trip and all that. (I think I could swing him to a positive Jamaica if I saw some mention of fishing excursions in Jamaica in my research online- surely they have that there??)
We usually do our vacations pretty jam-packed/gungho lots of stuff scheduled type vacations... but I'd rather try to steer from that this time... since it would be a trip just for the two of us which we haven't done since that Cancun trip 10yrs ago (all vacations since then have been with our kids as family... oh and did I mention we normally don't have a babysitter for evenings out here usually? So we've been out alone just the two of us for a movie or dinner/etc. maybe a handful of times in the past 10yrs..... gotta add that in so you see how much this is needed. LOL). We need some "alone re-aqquaint ourselves to one another" time- KWIM?

I'm still trying to decide but I really need to quick. I'm not one to usually take "risks" though.. so while most of me wants to go to Jamaica for the reasons I've stated- part of me is "go with what you know"- which is Cancun. But I feel like if I go to Cancun I'm going to wish I'd gone to Jamaica... Cancun twice/Jamaica zero? Doesn't sound right to me. LOL

Whoops- question... do you HAVE to have a passport to go to Jamaica? I'm having trouble finding much info on that but supposed one website says that you can get in with birth certificate and driver's license... just like on Disney cruises.

We didn't need passports for Cancun back then... but is Jamaica different? We didn't plan on getting passports and if we go to Jamaica it will be right after school ends in a couple of weeks.... do we need a passport?
