At rope drop which direction is best to head when going to Nemo, through Tomorrowland or around the front of the Matterhorn?

Definitely not Tomorrowland. You want to head towards the Matterhorn. If you are near the front then turn right at the Matterhorn and walk into the chains which make up the line. If you know there are lots of people in front of you, then turn left at the Matterhorn and walk behind it and look for the line there.

It is hard to overstate the importance of being near the front. The line builds so quickly, and because of its low capacity it is unlike any other ride in recent years. Being just one minute later to the Nemo line can mean 30-60 minutes of extra waiting in the morning.

im not sure when you went BUT, they forced us to go left of matterhorn and get in line from the END of Nemo line. hence if you run right of the matterhorn, they will send you up the line and block you from going under the queue chains.

How far in front were you? We were literally the second family walking up to the Matterhorn. There were CMs trying to provide guidance. No big deal, but we would have been the second family in line but they made us go through all of the switchback chains and, despite warnings from the CMs there, some children cut under the chains to get their family ahead of us. So we were third.

We did this during EE on Tuesday June 26. And we never ran or even jogged. We just power walked.

Maybe they do it differently between EE and non-EE days? Or maybe they have changed methods over the last month? Or maybe if you are one of the first they let you go right at the Matterhorn, but after the line starts to fill they direct you to the left?

there was like 3-4 people ahead of me... and it was a Non-EE day. BUT it went around 1-2 weeks after Nemo opened... could be the reason why.
