Which part of August?

My family of 5 with 3 little ones (6, 4 and 2) are planning our first trip to Disneyland ideally in August for our birthdays (ds and I both share birthdays on the 14th). From what I understand, the D23 expo will be happening that weekend, as well as the So Cal blackout dates opening up shortly after. I'm getting mixed information as to when I should visit, I've read it's less busy during the latter part of August but I've also read to visit before the blackout opens. Please help me decide what would be a less busier time to visit, the week before (8-15) or afterwards (15-22)?

With the 60th anniversary this summer IMO it is a no-brainer to go the week of Aug 15 while the blackout still exists.

LAUSD will probably start school on August 11th so anytime after that should mean less families with kids. Don't now about Orange County schools but my guess is the schedule is similar.

Just a warning - August has the potential of being oven cleaning cycle hot. It's dry so you don't have to worry about humidity. Just plan to be in air conditioning during the noon through 3:00 hours.

What are the crowds like during August before the AP blackout dates, will it be doable with 3 little ones? Any tips or advice for braving the crowds? Our last disney experience was a visit last year in November pre thanksgiving so it was pretty tame. Hopefully I won't be in over my head going during that time.
