For my 999th post on DisBoards (good grief, I spend a lot of time here), I thought I'd talk about the 999 ghosts at the Haunted Mansion. I know that the HatBox Ghost was recently added, but according to our ghostly narrator, there's still only 999. So either a ghost got evicted, or finally escaped purgatory. I'm sure the kid from Sixth Sense could help figure out which one it is, but I hear he's now working as a greeter over at Universal. Unavailable.

So which Happy Haunt is your favorite? Mine would definitely be the bass singer head statue in the cemetery.

According to the tale I heard the Hat Box ghost has always been there but it's just recently that he has chosen to (re)materialize so he was already part of the 999!

I don't know their names or back stories but I simply adore the dancing ghosts in the ballroom scene.

Thurl Ravenscroft? He's definitely my favorite, and he was also the voice of Tony the Tiger for a long time, as well as the voice in other Disney park rides.

Thurl Ravenscroft is ALL the singing heads in the cemetery. He's just in different positions and presentations. He's marvelous and missed greatly. He was GRRrrrrrreeaat!

There's only one head that is Thurl's, and he sings lead, but there are other singers.

From Snopes - "The images on the other four busts are those of the singers who harmonize on "Grim Grinning Ghosts" behind Thurl Ravenscroft's lead bass vocal (no, despite the remarkable resemblance, Leslie Nielsen is not one of them): Chuck Schroeder, Bob Ebright, Jay Meyer, and Verne Rowe."

Thurl Ravenscroft was a member of the church I attended as a child, and his "head" and voice were one of the reasons why I was first taken to Disneyland -- so we could "find Thurl" in the rides, since we knew him from church.

The bride in the attic that kills all of her husbands.

Oh! And let's not forget the famous, legendary Monkey Bride! Is she there during the non-holiday times as well (when the Mansion is in its regular form), or is she just a Halloween Time and Holiday season exclusive?

Ezra, Gus, and Phineas (at least one of them always follows me home :teeth:) and the Hatbox Ghost :hmghost:are my favs.

...but, if I had to pick one of the more obscure characters, it would have to be the poor ghoul laying bricks into the entrance of his own tomb...Poor, misguided soul.

I became a Disney Fangirl when I was a wee girl, watching a special about the opening of Disney World. I can remember like it was yesterday, watching the ghost dance in the ballroom and thinking, " That is AWESOME!!!" Every time I ride past them I am Little MaleficentRN all over again. :cutie:

"Come back, come back....don't forget your death certificate."

By the way, what is the hatbox ghost? I hear of it often but don't know what she/he looks like.

The Hatbox Ghost is my avatar. He is an animatronic that was in the Haunted Mansion when it opened, but the effect of his head disappearing and reappearing in a hatbox did not work properly so it was removed. He has been missing ever since until finally rematerializing earlier this year in Disneyland's Haunted Mansion just outside the attic scene. I like the one who is trying to get out of the coffin. "Lemme outta here!" Listening to the ride on subsonic right now, actually. Too funny

Technically isn't there a 1000th haunt? I remember there was a charity auction, and dentist or doctor named Jay won. I only remember, because that's my name lol.

Love this ride, even had to ride it when I visited Tokyo Disney. So to answer the question, I'm always fond of the bride who has killed her husbands.

Thank you so much! I can't wait to look for him when I go in October.
