I've found some great deals on overstock.com, taking a 4-piece Traver's Choice set from $390 to $99. It looks like a decent set, and has good customer reviews... also practically free shipping.

On Jcpenney, there is a 6 piece American Tourister set for $139. It is nice, and is expandable, but then I found on walmart.com a 5 piece set also by American Tourister for only $89. The one at walmart says it's made of 1,200 denier polyester... the one at Penney's says it's 600 denier waterproof polyester. This is confusing to me!! I assume the higher the number the better, but it's also cheaper. And... is the one at Walmart also waterproof??

THEN there is a 3 piece set (which is all we REALLY need) at Target w/ free shipping for $79. It is called Expedition 5000. It is also made of 1200 denier polyester... still don't know what that means though.

PLEASE HELP!! I just need a good solid luggage set, with decent wheels (think they all have that)... the outside pockets are a nice feature too. Any opinions out there? Thanks in advance... :confused3

I have found that Walmart has good prices on luggage. JCPenney always runs deals, but it can be spendy.

Try Kohl's (www.kohls.com) as they have some good deals. That is where I got my wifes luggage set. I personally have the Disney luggage you can get at disneydirect.com. Couldn't pass on luggage with Mickey on it!

I, personally, would rather drive to a store to look at luggage. That way you can try it out first to see if you like it. You can get good deals on luggage sets.

Have a great day!

I also like to check things out in person, to really "feel" it. We ended up with some clearance pieces from Kohls (all plain black w/wheels and extendable handle, few different sizes). It was a particular collection that the store never marked down, so no one knew it was ever on sale, I found out it was $8 - $12 a piece when I got to the register!!! I ended up going back and buying all of it, LOL!!!!!

Be sure to check amazon.com for luggage and reviews.
Also ebags.com is another great place to buy luggage (that is usually where I buy mine and haven't been disappointed)
Of course don't forget ebay.

Tuesday Morning, Ross, Marshalls and TJMaxx. Excellent stuff, excellent prices.

Generally speaking, luggage that is sold in "pay one price" sets tends to be of lesser quality than luggage that is priced by the piece. Also, sets tend to include pieces you might not need. Buy the pieces you need. If you need two 22" rollaboards, then buy two 22" rollaboards.

Take a tape measure when shopping. Any bag that exceeds a total measurement of 62" (H, W, and depth) is too big to fly on any air carrier without paying an oversize charge. If it's close to 62", don't risk it (handles, wheels, and filled pockets contribute to the size.) Don't trust the size given on the tag; measure it. Go for the lightest weight you can get; the airlines are lowering the per-bag limits all the time.

So, does anyone happen to know if the higher the denier (related to fabric) number the better, or the lower the better?

Also - what is allowed these days for how many bags per person? I'm flying Delta, in case that makes a difference. There are 5 of us. How many carry ons? How many checked? Which does our stroller count against if we check it at the gate?

Thanks to all.... :sunny:

The higher the number, the better.

Keep in mind that manufacturers make different lines for different stores.

Make sure the suitcases have solid rubber wheels and not crushable plastic ones.

I'd second the warning about too large of a suitcase! Besides not being within the size limits, it is very easy to over pack and get charged an overweight fee.
