Which items should I get at Costco?

I have not been to Costco in 10+ years, but will be there tomorrow.

Which items do you purchase there?

We are a small family (3), and I don't want to be pulled into the "must buy 10 pounds of Cheetos" thing and purchase stuff that will be wasted.

I am thinking more on the lines of paper products, and HBA, as well as stuff that can be frozen that is not huge bulk.

What do you purchase when you go to Costco??

I usually get throwaway cups for coffee - DH uses these (he won't use the insulated cups I can wash because he's usually running to different places and ultimately leaves them somewhere), paper plates, utensils, water, a huge beef tenderloin that I cut into a combination of filets, kabobs and stir fry (I freeze them in portion sizes).

we dont go all the time because we dont need much but its nice having frozen stuff to pull out on busy days

We are a family of three also!

We buy the following on a regular basis:

*Paper Towels (make sure you have the room for storage)
*Toilet Paper (ditto)
*Cheese Sticks
*Mickey Mouse Chicken Nuggets - real meat and they taste good
*Rotisserie Chicken - we eat several meals off of these
*Face wipes (the best I have EVER tried.... and I have tried alot of different brands --- expensive and cheap)
*Tribe Hummus - individual cups
*Avocados - let them ripen on the counter for a few days and then into the fridge until ready to use...they will stay good for weeks!

OH.... I can go on and on.... but these are a few that we buy frequently.

Family of 4 here. . . I get the 24oz Poland Springs sport top water bottles, Kirkland trash bags, Paper Towels (whatever's cheapest - the big packs of paper towels are all deals there compared to other stores), clorox wipes, and usually a goodie from the bakery!

Coffee. I have 18 cats. We buy catfood and frontline. And anything. Honestly if you just know how to store stuff--anything. Most perishable stuff can be frozen, non perishable keeps. Only thing I ever had trouble with was the big jug of artichoke hearts. I eventually ate them all but won't be buying them again soon...

Unless you buy the Kirkland brand of paper products (toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, etc), I find that I get better deals at Target or my local supermarket when they have sales on these items combined with my mfrs coupons.

I do buy my vitamins there (Kirkland brand)

You really need to price compare. A lot of stuff I can get cheaper at Publix with BOGOs so you just know what you'd usually spend. That said I have a family of 5 and I buy a lot of:

Nature's Own Whole Wheat Bread (2/$3.50 vs $2.75/loaf)
Tortilla chips
queso dip
chicken nuggets
frozen organic broccoli
all natural juice boxes for the kids' school lunches
Lance crackers
Fiber One bars
Peanut Butter
organic jelly

Milk (on occasion, won't make a special trip)

Paper towels, toilet paper & napkins - all Kirkland. Paper plates, cups,freezer bags, trash bags(Kirkland brand) water,laundry detergent, chicken. We also buy the steak & cut it up & freeze it. In the fall & winter, I also buy the roasts & cut them & freeze them. I do a lot of baking in the winter, esp around the holidays so I stock up then on baking ingredients. I've purchased a camera, a vac, various Christmas gifts & birthday gifts (books, cds, video games) - good prices & good quality.

We are a family of four, but my 2 sons eat like birds, so it's like buying for a famiy of 3. I buy chicken breasts from their freezer section. They are individually sealed, so you just take down and de-frost what you need. I also buy milk, orange juice, juice boxes for the kids school lunch. Have you tried Sams club? It seems like they have things in smaller sizes. Instead of one monster sized bottle of ketsup, it might be in 2 normal sized bottles, for example.

We are kind of in a shopping black hole where I live. Unless you can buy it at Walmart, you are pretty much out of luck.

We normally order our Zytec (costco brand) online from Costco, so I will be sure to peek at that. My mom and I are debating splitting a cake (Costco cakes are soooo good!) and will each probably grab a dozen muffins too. And possibly some croissants.

I will also take a peek at their meat.

We will probably be there for a while, LOL. Last time my mom went there, she didn't have any cash on her - only the checkbook - and Costco only takes American Express and cash. We have a lot of peeking to do!

First, be sure to pick up a coupon book from the desk on your way in. Other than coupon specials that make sense for us to buy, I like their trash bags, dog treats ( the thick chicken jerky made in USA), tomatoes ( in season ), take and bake pizzas, organic veggies, specialty cheeses, and their rolls ( like the Hawaiian bread rolls). They also now have chicken that isn't infused with salt water in vac packs. I also check out the kids pj's and clothing. Recently they had a wonderful price for girl's pettiskirts and Hanna Andersson outfits.---Kathy

I always buy the bagels, panko crusted tilapia (frozen), Morey's marinated salmon, oreida french fries, rotisserie chicken, gum, organic cane sugar, and we bought 2 tv's there. I would suggest buying TV's there, you get additional 2 year warranty and if you use AMEX an additional year. We bought a LCD from Costco 2 years ago. One week before the 2years was up our TV broke. Costco sent someone over to fix it, It broke the next week again. Costco replaced it with a newer model tv. Just bought our second LCD from them last week based on the extended warranties and great service.

They definetly take checks that the only way I pay.

I'm a family of 6 so don't go by me!

But I do go with my BFF every couple of months and we split stuff. So you might want to see if a friend wants to split some snacks or something like that. We usually let each kid pick out a different snack (4 kids pick) and then split it down the middle. This way I have 4 different kind of snacks without getting board of them.

The fresh parmesan bagels in the bakery section are amazing! I freeze them the day I buy them and toast them. A family favorite!

Also they make an excellent spinach ravioli in the frozen food section that is awesome for a side dish.

We always buy the tortillas in bulk. We go through them pretty quickly. Also, the small bottles of water are perfect for the kids lunches.

Okay so we are religious costco shoppers I love them The thing is I NEVER buy paper products (toilet paper, paper towels) at Costco. I can get them cheaper elsewhere. I always get my waffles from there, hamburger, steaks, cheese, sour cream, coffee, snacks, bacon, chicken breasts, spinich and cheese raviolis. Anyways the point is to really know your unit prices on stuff before you go. My family just went the other day to buy some stuff and I had a coupon for cheerios but i failed to read that you had to buy 2 boxes two save three dollars. Well we actually like the generic cereal at meijers so for us it was not worth it to spend 10.00 on cheerios. We could get 5 flavors of different cereal. Anyways again the main thing is to have a idea of what things are priced at the local grocery and decide if it is a good deal at costco for you. Oh yes we get our life water at Costco It is a good price not on sale and a GREAT savings when they have coupons

Besides pretty much all of the above that we buy at Costco, I absolutly LOVE the Hannah's Tzatziki cucumber and garlic greek yogurt dip. It is so good. I use it to dip veggies. I put it on my turkey burgers. One of my favorite food items from Costco.

They also take debit cards if your ATM card is a debit card use that, it's much quicker and you don't have to worry about carrying cash.
