Which is better for a first-time owner who won't use their points one UY, Renting or Transferring?

Correct. And the reason is that points, by themselves, have no value unless tied to a reservation.

And, because of that, DVCMC won’t get involved with issues, but could be why they now require a three way call,
Don't get this ....Disney certainly puts a value on OTUP which are essentially, at least as I see it, tranferred points right?....

DVC only sells them to you when you make a reservation so they are bought to book a room

That is the difference. While technically, once transferred, those points will then be used for future reservations, the POS states they on their own don’t have value and why payments are not allowed. They are only good when actually used to complete the reservation.

I realize it sounds strange but is why it’s different than a rental which is an actual reservation that the owner books.

I'm not trying to split hairs....but isn't that what ALL points are bought for? I mean, it's not like we are using our points to buy tickets or airfare. I read on the boards (ad nauseum) that you are only buying the ability to book a room, right?

I know that DVC can use their points "differently" than the regular owners can, but I do think that there could be an issue here. DVC *is* transferring points into my account when I *buy* OTU points, even though I am using them to make a reservation at that exact moment, but the fact remains that they ARE transferring the points AND charging a fee for them which is a violation of their own terms.

I do not know if there is a solution, though. If they remove the clause, they open themselves up to involvement if transactions go awry. But if they start enforcing it across the board, it would effectively ban most transfers between members and eliminate the purchase of OTU points which would benefit nobody and anger everyone.

The point here is that OTU points are seen as part of a rental, which is allowed for payment vs. while payment for transfers is not.

The fact that DVC has the ability to transfer and book at once is why I think they have the ability to “stretch the rules”…but it’s also why they will not let you simply buy them without them being needed for a specific night since then it would be paying for transferred points.

They won’t ever ban transfers because they can’t…it is part of the POS and they Can’t make that change without owners votes.

I get it does seem like splitting hairs, but it is a bit different that DVC has vs owners who can’t move points on their own.

That is also why DVCMC doesn’t do anything regarding transfers because they know people are being paid but the clause allows them not to be part of it if things go the wrong way.

I think it’s also why, like I have said, that they now require a three way call...just to ensure the right parties are on the line.

As I said, they only charge you when booking a reservation and IMO, I think that is what puts it into more a rental, even though they have the ability to move them to your account.

Also, DVD has the ability to sell points so being OTU…could also be seen as you buying points from them but for one year, and not for a full contract…so in that regard, it can be seen as different too.

The big problem with this plan is that once the points are banked, then you have to use them on either a longer vacation or a vacation in better accommodations. And we all know that just leads to addonitis and the purchase of more points. :scared:
or you just book whatever you initially planned the next year & keep banking any extra points. Having “money” in the bank (i.e. Points) is a very nice feeling, one I haven’t had for sometime lol
