How is this political? Taxes affect all political parties?
A sensible discussion about taxes may or may not be deemed political. Cheep shots like this one and many more in this thread clearly go over the line:
I pay. I am a have, not a have not. AAAAAAaaand, a villge in Kenya is missing an idiot. I hope they get him back real soon!

Pretty sure this post is political.

Oops, sorry Sbell - didn't see your post.

I get a little bit back....but it's pretty much a wash between the state and feds.
My accountant said we need to change our withholdings throughout the year so we don't cut it so close at the end of the year.:teacher:

Good luck with that. I'm predicting a very quick decent into the usual, I'm paying taxes for all the lazy bums out there on welfare and collecting food stamps.

I haven't read all the responses yet, but had to comment on this one.
We receive ALL of our taxes back, and some earned income credit (a teeny bit), and are certainly not lazy bums collecting welfare or food stamps!!!
My husband is in the military. He makes over 75,000 a year when you factor in our housing allowance, food allowance, ect. however half of his income is not taxable (housing allowance, food allowance, ect.) When we file our taxes it's based on his basic pay (which is significantly less than he actually takes home). Not our fault, that's just the way it works!
Certainly not lazy bums!

Have been paying taxes since I was 15 and got my SS card. I'm 53 now. Doesn't matter who is in power, my taxes have NEVER gone down.:guilty::sad2:

Now we pay DH and I. Take 0 deductions(on W2), no children and pay, pay, pay. Our combined income is over 100K and we are married so that is a penalty.

This year I suggested to DH that we get a divorce. Why? Because we would get money back for once from taxes. Everyone of my friends are getting something back. My single friends, married. I just don't get it. So if I was single I would have gotten a nice $2000.00 refund. Now DH and I will pay $1800.00 to the Feds. today. DH refuses to get divorce (we've been married 35 years) but I think its nuts to pay year in and year out almost 40% of our incomes to the Feds./State.:sad2::sad1: Gee what's it like to get money back? So sick of it.

Oh and I'm a Liberal.;)

not sure I'm understanding you. :confused3 I wasn't saying anyone was. I was replying to the op's request to keep the responses civil. It's been my experience that these threads quickly disintergrate into nasty stereotypes and cheap shot as the "Village idiot" remark proved.

Receiving and have been pretty much since my ex and I split up. I'll have my masters in a year though, and be back on the paying end again. Actually, at the beginning of my marriage, we were a military family and qualified for WIC as well as the earned income credit, despite me doing on base home daycare as well. I had a lot of friends who were on foodstamps, even though their husbands were in the army.

When I read your post I thought you were implying that those who don't pay taxes are lazy bums on welfare and food stamps.
Sorry if that's not how you meant it.
There are quite a few military family's who qualify for both welfare and food stamps, but certainly aren't lazy bums. I believe 31 million dollars worth of food stamps were used at commisary's last year.(and that doesn't account for families that shop else where)
A service member right out of boot camp earns very little, and if they have a family they may need to rely on food stamps to get by. It's not always possible for a spouse to find a job with such frequent moves, or if the other parent is deployed for long periods.
It just bugs me when people assume that those on food stamps are lazy, and the rest of the tax paying Americans have to pick up their slack.
Some of them work very hard, for very little.

I think you folks in the military are not paid enough, I don't begrudge any monies you get from an earned income credit!

So sorry! This is what I get for doing two things at once!!!
When I read your post, I saw a period where you had a comma.
I thought you were saying that you thought this thread would decent into the usual, and then went on to say that you were paying taxes for all those lazy bums on welfare!
Sorry!

Oh thanks!!
The truth is we feel like we don't need the tax credit, and actually feel really guilty getting it!!
Younger service members certainly do struggle, but we feel really comfortable with the income my husband receives, not wealthy, but certainly not struggling.
I understand why they don't tax our housing allowance and other allowances, but around tax time we feel super guilty filing taxes based on an income that's around 45,000, when we actually live on much more.
