Okay, locals, we are traveling from Utah and have the choice of the 60 or the 91, which freeway is going to be the best route to get to HoJo and DLR?

TIA
Shannon

Easy answer from a former local. The 91 will take you right into Orange County near DLR.

I think we took the 91 when we drove last time - 2 years ago- but we have flown for our other visits and I couldn't remember.

Thanks

You can take the 60 to the 57 which will take you right into Orange County. I would recommend avoiding the 91 since it rivals the 405 as the most congested freeway in Southern California.

The 57 exits at Ball Road which takes you to the parking garage. You simply turn right and take it down to just past Harbor Blvd. If you're trying to avoid interchanges this is the best way to go. Taking the 91 will still require you to either get on the 57 or go up to the 5 and back track to Disneyland.

Here's the best route. Take the 15 South to the 60 West then to the 57 South, exit Ball Road and turn right. Take that two Disneyland Drive. It will be the second signal past Harbor Blvd. Do not turn at the first signal as that is cast member parking. That will get you there with the least amount of headaches.

Enjoy your trip.

Yes, this is the route our friend who goes to DL a lot recommends. Depending on the time of day, the 91 can have pretty bad traffic. I have to go on it twice a week around 10am and then to go back home around 12 and it's usually good at those times (unless there's an accident) but it is not a fun drive other times of the day. Also, we just took that route a few weeks ago on a Saturday morning thinking the traffic would be fine and it was bad because they had the freeway closed down during the night and it was just re-opening. Not sure if they are still doing work on it but thought i would mention it. So, although i actually have't tried it yet, the 60/57 route is probably better.

They're always doing work. CalTrans tries to get it all done in the evenings but they do work on some projects mid-day as well. Considering how many people utilize this route on a daily basis it's a wonder they don't do more work. It gets worse every year. You've pretty much got an hour and a half without serious traffic but one accident and you're out of luck. If I can avoid the 91 I do.

I'd also go the 60 as well, especially if you're coming from the north. It tends to be less crowded than the 91. The only thing that would chance my mind is if there was a bad accident on the 60, so you may just want to listen to a quick traffic report as you're driving and approaching the 60

LOL, guess I was outvoted.

I grew up in Riverside CA where the 91 and 60 converge and I am there several times a year (was just there for 10 days and returned this week FWIW). My step-father worked in Orange County for several years in the late 1990's and carpooled daily. If we were traveling to DLR or Orange County it would not occur to me or anyone in my family to use 60. Using 91 is automatic for us. I would be curious if there are any commuters out there on DIS who commute from Riverside to OC using 60 as it seems so strange to me and, frankly, out of the way.

In any case I fully agree that 91 is a very busy highway and can be a disaster at peak times. We took 4 hours once to get from DLR to Riverside (40 miles) when leaving DLR at 2PM on a weekday. When we travel to DLR from Riverside these days I borrow a toll lane transponder from by step-father so we can use the toll lane if necessary.

Like all of the SoCal highways it depends on time of day and the whims of the traffic gods.

I would still recommend using 91 even though I am clearly in the minority here. But I would time it to avoid morning rush hour if possible. Traveling from Riverside to OC any time other than in the morning should be fine in my experience. In the evening the traffic flows the other direction.

Just my two cents.

From Riverside, then yes, I would agree to take the 91 but if you're coming from further east then it isn't necessarily the best route. We live east of Riverside off of the 10 and when I check the estimated times on google for going on the 10/215/91/55/22/5 vs 10/15/60/57 there is only a 2 minute difference. I know you probably stay on the 91 as opposed to getting on the 55, etc but i like that route because the 5 gets you closer to DL without having to drive so much on surface streets which always seem to take forever with all the lights. Actually, i'm not completely convinced that it's better to take the 60/57 but I've never tried it and we might try it out tomorrow to see how it goes. I think we'll check sigalert.com in the morning before we go to see which route has less traffic. Anyway, like you said, it just depends on a bunch of different factors (time, day, accidents, etc)

The OP was asking about using the 91 or 60 from I-15 going south which would mean cutting over in the Ontario airport area (for 60) or further down approaching the Lake Elsinore area (for 91). From the I-15 that would mean only about 15-20 miles on 91 to get into OC. Yes, I personally take the 91 all the way over to I-5 and then south when traveling to DLR.

Unless the OP is coming into the Riverside area in the morning I have a hard time seeing how the 60 would be better than the 91. Seeing that you are currently a local (sounds like Fontana, Rialto or maybe Redlands) I would be curious as to your opinion but would be surprised if you disagreed. :)

Yucaipa, actually, so you were close. :) I don't really have much experience with the 60 myself and the most "comfortable" route for me to take is the 91/55/22/5N because I'm more familiar with that way. I have to drive to CHOC (off the 22) twice a week so i'm just used to that route. However, when I asked my friend who has had an AP many years, which route he thinks is the best, his opinion was to take the 15/60/57 route. He says he always regrets it when he takes the 91 so I thought i would throw his opinion into the mix. I haven't actually tried this route yet but I do wish I would have taken it a few weeks ago on our way back from DLR because traffic on the 91 was horrible at 7:30/8pm. Corona seems to be the main problem spot, IMO. Anyway, not sure if any of that made sense but that's my thinking on the subject. It's always kind of interesting discussing freeway routes to hear about what other people do.

To the OP, good luck picking a route and have fun on your trip!

Thanks everyone. My DH is a native San Franciscan and he thought my post was kind of funny. He said it's like asking the best route to get somewhere in SF. Someone will always have their favorite way and of course, theirs is the right way!! :)

You could defuse the issue if you just took an airplane. ;)

True, but we are leaving in 5 days and airline tickets are not in the budget for this trip! :) Besides our car gets about 40 mpg and so total cost for us to drive will be under $60. Much better than about $750 to fly for all 5 of us. Just means more money on Souvenirs!

Interestingly enough when I lived in Riverside I swore by the 91 even though it meant a 2 hour commute to Brea every day. I could take a an extra 15 minutes and take a detour up the 15 to the 60 so I didn't have to sit in stop and go traffic but I cherished that extra 15 minutes of sleep.

I checked Google maps to make sure I'm not giving bad advice.

My route is about 647 miles
Hydroguy puts you at about 657 miles
LavenderPeach is roughly 656 miles

You only save 10 minutes using my route and maybe a gallon of gas. If you manage to avoid the 91 traffic you should be good to go on any of these routes.

600+ miles? Wow, one could almost make it to San Francisco and back! ;)

I assume you missed the decimal points and it has made me rethink my advice - obviously because the 60 route appears to be shorter. My thinking about 60 vs 91 starts from Riverside of which I am most familiar. But if one thinks about it from the I-15 near Ontario airport I can see how the extra miles on the 15 south to get to the 91 will counterbalance.

Bottom line appears that if one is coming south on I-15 the 60/57 route is best. If one is coming from further east (like Riverside near the 91/60 intersection) I still think the 91 is best - especially if not during morning rush to OC or evening rush back to Riverside.

SuperVet, thanks for the extra time in your study. :thumbsup2

Sweet. I got props from Hydroguy! Nice sticky by the way. I'm impressed. Us AP holders never really consider how much planning goes into a Disneyland trip if you're not a local. In all honesty the routes are all pretty similar so they can take whichever is easiest for them. Granted I don't consider 10 miles to be very far. I usually take the 91 out of habit though I tend to get burned by traffic when I do which is really the only thing that would steer me towards the 60 instead.

It sounds like a heck of a drive. Make sure you have plenty of Foghat on your iPod.

This is the route we took just a week ago coming south off I-15. It was fast and easy, not busy at all.

Have a great time! :cheer2:

I’m going to add one more vote for 60/57. We drive down from Vegas a lot and have never had a problem with the 60. The car pool lane is your friend. It is also an easy interchange from the 60 to the 57 in the car pool lane.

We are staying overnight in Vegas - so that makes the drive much more manageable. LOL Plus the portable DVD player is my friend! It keeps the kids entertained in the back.

Although, I have never driven from Vegas to Anaheim on a Sunday morning. What can I expect traffic to be like?? Any ideas?

Thanks for the advice and good wishes. We definitely plan on having a great time!! :thumbsup2
