I almost gave the wrong translation, I wear a Saint Jerome medal, he's the parton saint of Librarians, there is also a line of thought about Saint Lawerence (sp) but they never seem to give a last name for either.
I just checked the other St. Jerome... your right, no last name. I wonder why that is. Here is the info on Jerome Emiliani:
St. Jerome Emiliani
(1481-1547)
The fortress had been captured. Soldier Jerome Emiliani found himself in a set of chains taking up residence in a dark dungeon. Events such as these usually bring about a conversion of heart. This is precisely what happened.
Through the intercession and guidance of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Jerome escaped from prison. His first stop was the local Church. At a side altar dedicated to the Blessed Mother, Jerome left his prison chains and dedicated his life to the Mother of God. This led him to the priesthood.
After his ordination, Jerome discovered his true calling - to help orphans. Malnutrition and the plague, caused by battles and wars, killed many people. This led young children, whose parents died, into the streets without food, shelter or anyone to care for them. Upon seeing this, Jerome, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, bought a home and converted it into an orphanage.
St. Jerome made it a priority that the children he took in were well fed, clothed and catechized. Jerome never slowed down. His dedication and charity were great and admired by many. This inspired other men to join him and follow his way of life and apostolic endeavors.
From founding orphanages, St. Jerome also founded a hospital and even cared for prostitutes by establishing a shelter for them. St. Jerome gave 110% to those who were in need and this eventually broke his health. He died at the age of 56 in 1547.
The true mark of any Christian is selflessness. To forget oneself in order to serve others is at the heart of the Gospel message. The life of St. Jerome Emiliani beautifully captures Christ's teaching that laying down one's life for others is the greatest act of love.
St. Jerome Emiliani - pray for us.
God bless!
