So, it looks like DW and I will be alone on our trip next year, so we're looking at branching out and doing a few new things.

So far, we're going to do a helicopter tour, a horseback safari, and spend a day out at the Wilderness Preserve. We figured on taking a trip to the beach as well... last time we went to Clearwater, loved it but the town was a disappointment.

As we're not the sort of people who can lay on a beach all day, we need to have a decent town at the beach or very nearby to provide something else to do on our day of relaxation.... any recommendations on which beach offers the best?

:cool1:

Clearwater for us anyday:rotfl2:

Mid morning arrival, Cabana for DH as he burns v easily :rolleyes1, little walk around midday to find lunch - subway just perfect! Warm calm water that you can just float on :goodvibes

3(ish) head down to Indian Rocks Beach for dinner at the original Crabby Bills.
It's only about 20 mis away from Clearwater but it's very different. V quiet open beach & great for a stroll before & after dinner

Hated Cocoa Beach, dirty, windy, cold water & dreadful facilities.

Daytona was ok - apart from the cars (& we didn't take our on the beach, obviously!!!) - doesn't stick in my kind so it was probably ok.

I have lived at the beach all my life, so I know my beaches :rolleyes1

We love Anna Maria Island, its paradise :)

Next year we're spending 5 days there after a couple of weeks in the parks just to unwind but we've gone there for day trips too and it was a very relaxing day. They have a free trolley service so you can explore the island and they have a lovely pier, you can go fishing, nice restaurants too.

Thanks for tips!!

Katie - i enjoyed clearwater but we really aren't laze around on the beach people - if we sit still on the sand for an hour it's classed as a long time for us lol. We'll rule out Cocoa and Daytona based on your thoughts...

...and having just googled Anna Maria Island, that's definitely a day trip that's just made it onto the calendar, unless someone can top it.....?

:goodvibes:

Fort Desoto National Park.....

Beach is gorgeous but you can also explore the fort area, or take a trip down the coast a bit to Fort Myers.....again the beaches are lovely and there's a nice touristy area for some much needed retail therapy and lunch.

:wizard:

John's Pass looks good... thinking i might have to add that to the list and do an overnighter in the Tampa area!

Fort Desoto also... gaaaahhhhh too many choices!!!! may end up doing all of them !
