We have an off day from WDW planned. Had planned on seeing Shuttle launch in June but the date was moved back. We want to go to a beach with 2 DS (4 & 7). We would like a clean beach but within a couple of hours drive from Orlando. Would like suggestions on which beach would be best? Either coast.

I like both the gulf and the ocean, but I think that the ocean side would probably be the easiest to get to from Orlando. Maybe some of our Florida friends can help you out.

The closest beach is Cocoa Beach. The next closest is Tampa/St. Pete. If you like shells, head to Sanibel Island, about 5 hours south. There's a ton of them there!

For a day trip, we have had good luck with Melbourne, or technically Indianalantic (sp?) It's just a bit south of Coco Beach, and about an hour to an hour and a half from Orlando. For a longer stay we prefer the gulf side, and will second that Sanibel/Fort Myers area is beautiful. St. Pete can be nice too, and is about two hours from WDW.

Thanks for the info. LIked the St. Pete link. Which of their beaches is best for a family? ;)

St. Pete Beach and Clearwater Beach are great for families. Clearwater has a huge playground right on the beach. But it can get really packed. St. Pete Beach is a little slower. And Pass-A-Grille on the south end of the beach has no high-rise condos and is great for families.

I like Indian Rocks Beach too, but I'm biased. I live there. It is a smaller beach with less facilities, but it has great restaurants.

Exactly how far in driving time is St. Pete's from Orlando? Sounds like a great place to me. Thanks for all the great info!!!!!!! :)
