Where/When do you use CASH on board?

Is it my understanding that there is barely a need for real cash on board...that everything is charged to your account and then you "pay up" at Guest Services? If so, what will I need cash for? Some tips/all tips? Laundry machines? What else?

The only thing for which I've used cash on board are room service tips. At the bars, you're given a receipt to sign, and can add a tip to that (they automatically add 15%). I'm told that they now give you a slip to sign/add a tip for room service, even if you didn't order drinks (the food is free). Other than that, I would guess that you'd need coins for the laundry, but I've never used it, so I don't know for sure.

The only place you need cash is in port, and there you can use credit cards, too. On Castaway Cay, you need cash for the post office, but can charge anything else to your room.

I took $50 in ones and used maybe $12 - room service tips and laundry. We didn't mail anything from Castaway so we didn't use cash there. We used credit cards on Cayman and in Key West (didn't get off the ship in Cozumel).

One of the places we missed where cash comes in handy is on some of the excursions. Some will sell Tshirts/photos of your excursion and cash helps. Also, we went on our first excursion, which was great, but at the end they announced the boat crew worked for tips only, and we had none to leave. Embarassing, and we felt bad.
