Where to stop over on way down to the Fort

We'll be headed down in November, for the first time with our new trailer! DH usually makes the drive in one day, but wants to stop over since it'll be his first time driving a camper from Pennsylvania. Any ideas on where we can stop on the way down? Thanks!

What way are you going down? We always stop at a great campground near Orangeburg, SC.

there is a nice KOA in Florence SC that is right off of the road and easy to get to that we always stop at.

The name of the campground is Sweetwater Lake. It is off of 26 which is the way we go over to 95 from Ohio.

We're taking our RV down in December but staying at the cabins...we thought adding a night at the campground at the beginning would be easy...well, after reading here we know otherwise.

Any suggestions on a campground within 3 to 4 hour drive (coming from Mississippi, so let's say the panhandle to Gainesville area)?

We've got 4 kids ages 2 to 11....

Driving down from DE on 95 last year we stayed at Fayetteville KOA - very quiet and clean, nice pull thru sites. Next year we're stopping twice - Rocky Mount KOA and Savannah South KOA.

As always, I recommend you get the book "The Next Exit". Best book for interstate RV travelling ever made. You'll be surprised how many campgrounds are right off I-95.

Does this list Walmart locations? We want to just stop somewhere for a few hours for a quick nap and would like to find a Walmart close to 95. Is there a good guide for Walmarts?

It lists everything at each exit. Whether it's a Wal-Mart or BillyBob's Weinee Hut, it tells you everything at that exit.

The coolest part (unlike my GPS unit), everything typed in red in the book is considered RV accessible. No pulling off somewhere and find out it's too tight to pull the travel trailer in and you can hardly get turned around.

Camping World used to have a Wal-Mart directory as well. But if you're talking interstate travel, get the book that lists everything.

Hi everyone. I drive down with a 30 ft travel trailer about once a year from Texas. I totally agree with Lawnspecialties, "The Next Exit" is fantastic. I keep it in the front so my wife can find the rv friendly(in red) gas stations and which exit to take. This book is a must for rvers. Also, i go to KOA.com and plan my route, and use the search criteria of showing only campgrounds near the interstate. I love the KOAs near the interstate for easy access when passing through, also the quality is consistant. We usually now drive all the way from east Texas, 19 hours to the Fort. But I have stopped at the Milton FL KOA on I10 in the panhandle a couple of times and its great, about 6 hours from Orlando.

We're from the DC area and stop at South of the Border, on the NC/SC state line. It's about 1/2 way for us. Nothing to write home about, but we stop, plug in the electric (for heat/ac) and go to sleep. Get up and unplug in the morning and we're on our way again. Last trip it was still a bargain at $19/night.

gillenkl....we stopped at Rocky Mount KOA on our way home as we wanted to get a bit more distance on the log books and we did not like that one at all. I truly hope that you would reconsider.

We live just outside of D.C. and our usual stops are all KOA's and going down it's Rocky Mount, Savannah South (Florence, SC) and Jacksonville/St. Augustine. We like to get in early like 1 or 2 and kick back and the day of check-in like to leave a little later and be there by 11AM to noon. Coming back we will go to Savannah South and then Rocky Mount and then home. If we have side trips/visits we have stayed at Smithfield and Myrtle Beach. This time we are trying out the NAS Jacksonville FamCamp since I'm retired military.
