we will be arriving in savannah airport in April about 4:30pm we want a place in the down town area to see some of the sights even though it's a really short stay.

We would like a hotel that's not too expensive so we will be in the downtown area have a nice dinner before we head of the next day to HHI.

I live fairly close to Savannah and have stayed at most of the hotels in the historic district. I don't know what "not too expensive" means to you. I would be prepared to pay at least $150-$200. There's plenty of chain hotels (Hilton, IHG, Hyatt, Marriott) but if you want a real Savannah experience then I would suggest a B & B. Unless you are really on a budget don't get a hotel in Midtown. Although its only a couple of miles, it will take you about 30 minutes. It's just not worth the headache to us, then you have to find parking, etc. I would stay somewhere between, Montgomery, Olgethorpe, Bay and Broad (Although Broad can be a bit sketchy in places-closer to Olgethorpe). This will be with in a good walking distance to everything.

We stayed at the Sheraton for one night a couple of years ago on our way to WDW (needed to use our Starwood acct. to keep the points active). It was OK. We arrived at a prime afternoon check-in time and the lobby was pretty busy with others arriving at the same time. It's sort of on the edge of the historic district - it was a leisurely and scenic 10 minute or so walk to the historic River Street area. We made dinner ressies that evening at Paula Deen's restaurant (Green Fried Tomatoes - YUMMM) which was also about a 10 minute walk. I think the neighborhood area heading further away from this historic area was starting to get a little sketchy so I'd recommend using their valet parking service in their garage (no self parking available and I wouldn't try to street park). (Maybe it's near this sketchy area NicoleLarson mentions in her post?!) It's been a couple of years now so I forget what we paid. Of course it was more than if we'd booked like a Hampton Inn closer to I-95 or something like that (but like I said, we needed to use that Starwood acct. in some way). I want to say we got a Starwood rate of like about $140 and that included their breakfast buffet.
