Where to stay off-site for a family of 6?

I have looked at the on-site hotels for Universal and we just can't afford a suite or 2 rooms. Does anyone have any recommendations for hotels or rental properties for a Universal vacation?

I have stay at the Hawthorne Suites on Canada Avenue last year. The hotel was clean and had good free breakfast. It was really easy access to US/IOA.

I have looked at some of their rentals, but I really don't want to stay in one of the townhomes because they are 3 stories. My children range in age from 8 to 2. That is too many stairs for my comfort. I also don't want them sleeping on a separate floor from me.

Are the condos one story or more? I don't mind being on an upper floor, but I would prefer the actual condo to be all on one floor.

I also didn't like the townhomes at Vista Cay for the same reason you mentioned about one of the bedrooms being on the ground floor, and I think the others were on the 3rd. The condos are all one story, and there are some that are really large - 2000 sq. feet, and look to be beautifully decorated. Our stay starts in about a week, and I'd be glad to pass on a reference after our stay if you're interested!
