Where to stay in San Diego to avoid/minimize rental car

one of the best things we did on our DL/San Diego was get an unlimited ticket with grayline bus tours. we did DL for 3 days, san diego zoo & seaworld, universal studios hollywood, LA night tour and we didn't have to drive anywhere, no gas money, didn't get lost, and we loved riding the buses cause all the drivers were like tour guides. it was awesome!
the bus picked us up in front of our hotel and they took us to a a bus depot and it was so easy. i wil always do that! our trip was perfect, we did the southern california city pass that i bought online from cosco which was a great deal. we were out there for 8 nights and we stayed @ hojos across the street from DL, we had the best room, our balcony overlooking wishes fireworks everynight, it was very convient and we walked to DL! can't wait to go back!

That's some balcony that can see fireworks across the country! LOL. Disneyland fireworks are Believe (Christmas), Remember (off season), Dreams (Summer) and the fireworks for the Halloween party.

Thanks so much for all the info. I have not gotten the amtrak tickets yet... I had heard that it would be more expensive to drop car off at another location, and my boys would love to ride on the train, so we just thought it would be a neat experience. I didn't think about doing La Jolla and Torrey Pines on the way out though, so that's something to consider... would give us another half day to explore. I would love to get the city pass, but I don't think we have enough time to do all of the things to justify it... I really want to spend a couple of weeks here!

Thanks for the rental car info, I'll definitely check them out! I may also call Homewood and see what would be convenient to pick up/drop off around there and just start looking for deals in a few months. I thought Cabrillo would be a half day thing, so that's great to know... that'll give us enough time to explore Old Town a little... thanks for the links on the kids' activities!
