Where to Stay at Disneyland?

So my wife and I have a chance to get away on our own (no Kids) for a long weekend at the end of July and think we need to get some Disney fix and go to Disneyland for 4 days. We would get there on July 30 and leave very early on August 3rd. The problem we are having is where to stay as we want to keep this low cost and we are way to late to use our DVC so the options are and we would like to be within walking distance:
Hilton Anaheim
Clarion Hotel
Tropicana
Camelot
Red Lion

We just want a nice comfortable place to sleep as most of out time will be in the parks or DTD for sure. We are open to other options as well but trying to keep it at $1,500 for flight and hotel and those places fall within that budget. Don't feel bad for the kids as they get 6 night at Aulani and the 10 day Wonder cruise to Vancouver in September.

The Tropicana is great and of those listed, the closest! It's right across the street. We've stayed there twice and loved it both times!!

I have stayed at the Camelot and have no complaints, I appreciated the fridge and microwave and the soft beds. I will be staying at Tropicana in July, haven't stayed before but it is the same owners as the Camelot so I am not worried.

We've stayed at Red Lion once and stay at Hilton all the time. The Red Lion was fine, bed was ok, breakfast was ok, see the trend here? We might stay again if it was the cheapest price of the places we check. The Hilton is our regular haunt, mostly because we get Hilton points. It's a bit farther away then the others, but still walk-able. We love their beds and the Starbuck's in the lobby. Their breakfast buffet is great if you can get it as part of your room. It's a bit pricey by itself. We really like the lounge in the lobby. They have their own conventions there, so sometimes the lobby can be crowded if they have something going on.

We have had some nice stays at Camelot. Walkable, clean and comfortable.

We've stayed at the Clarion twice. It was fine and we found the walk to the parks very doable. We did however catch a shuttle back at night.

Well I am down to Three now, the Hilton, Red Lion and Tropicana. Thank you all for the feedback so far. I think I will have to do a PTR for this trip.

Not sure what dates you're looking for or rates, but you could get the Castle Inn and Suites for $120/nite through Last Minute Travel Club. Or, you could book the Marriott Suites for $113/nite. The Marriott is a little walk, but if the rate is lower than what you've found so far, you could use the difference t pay for ART.

We are checking into Red Lion tomorrow so I will give feed back once we return on Monday. We got a great rate of $89/night from Groupon. We see it listed from time to time so look out for that rate. We are going to walk to the Toy Story lot for transportation to the parks. I'll let you know how that goes as well.

We decided to book the Hilton as it was a great rate and we got it with breakfast. Can't wait till July 30th and our trip without kids.

Hubby and I stayed at the Hilton before and it was defiantly nice. But, I prefer the closeness of the Tropicana. I found the beds there very comfy.

Not the Clarion, ick. We stayed for one of my races and it was just not good. The parking was a mess, they had a wedding reception going on and the band was so loud we could hear it in our room and the room just felt old and worn out. We've stayed at multiple places around Anaheim, our favorite and most recent was the Marriott by the convention center, which is right behind the Clarion. We got a fairly good deal through Booking. We've also stayed at the La Quinta, which is about 2-3 blocks from the park, not quite walking distance, but it was surprisingly really nice.

Just got back from Red Lion. Customer service was excellent! I went to the 24 hour event at DL & called ahead & talked to the night mgr. To see what they could do for me as I wanted to check in & drop off my bags & head to the parks at 8am but check in wasn't until like 3pm. The mgr. Put a note on my reservation saying to take my credit card & to check me in once the room was available. They took my bags & locked them up until I returned. I returned at 3am & when I came to get my room key I was greeted with a hello & my name. To me it was great to actually know who I was, not just the lady in room 545. We were in the second building on the 5th floor & this was a very quiet room as we needed to sleep in the next day & absolutely was able to do that without any interruptions. The room was very clean & beds were comfortable. Toy Story lot was about a 10 minute walk & not really any waiting at all. I will definitely stay here again.

Sounds like a great choice! If you don't want to walk you can walk across the street to the toy story parking lot and take the shuttles. It's nice to have that option at the end of a long day too.

We just got back from the Candy Cane Inn and we don't think we'll stay anywhere else now if possible. Amazing continental breakfast , free parking , free dedicated shuttle ( NOT ART) , hospitality is wonderful , spacious rooms , great beds and a close walk ( 10-15 minutes tops) and also can walk to gardenwalk or 7-11 for snacks. I've already booked us a stay in December for 6 nights. They offer AAA/AARP/AP discounts too. At checkout I got a certificate for $10 off per night that stacks with my AP discount. Quiet rooms and just a great place. We loved it !

We stayed at the Red Lion about 5 years ago, and found it a nice stay overall for the price. Our room had a view of the fireworks, though its not especially close to it all, but was still nice to see when we came back to collapse around 9. Everything was modern and clean and enough space with comfortable beds. We also found the staff very accommodating and helpful, as we had family checking in at different times but they accommodated putting us near each other while still getting us the fireworks view. The breakfast was in a small room with the usual sort of stuff one gets, but the staff kept up with replenishing things. The walk was about 10 to 15, depending on the crosswalks, and easy in the morning, but a little tougher at night (had my parents with us and they were in their 60's). We usually stopped for dinner on the way back to break it up, but one night we tried the Disney Parking shuttle trick and they didn't really like cutting through the parking lot with all the cars and buses (must have missed a sidewalk somewhere).
