Where to shop for health insurance?

I would think a high deductible plan with low premiums would work for someone that doesn't think they "need" health insurance. Not familiar with plans that are actually called "catastrophic."

They don't always include the word "catastrophic" in the name of the plan. Here's an outline of what they generally include.

It's not uncommon for them to not cover routine office visits, immunizations, prescription drugs and annual check ups - things that would go toward your deductible in a regular high deductible plan.

They aren't a bad choice for healthy, young people without children. For someone with a family, paying OOP for the kids' annual check ups and shots can get pretty pricey!

When I had a high deductible plan, things like physicals and kids' shots were free (any preventive care was.)

I think at some point that is the case with the new laws, too...and if people actually get preventive care, that should lower overall health costs.

Not sure what a 'high' deductible plan looks like now though, when I had one seven years or so ago, I think it was 2500 for an individual and 5000 for a family. Now the regular deductible for a family at my work (I only have single coverage) is $4500.

I'm not trying to start a political debate, I promise. But wasn't the idea with mandated health care that the cost would go down? I admit I don't pay attention to politics

Yeah right.

Want to take a big step in reducing cost? Demand tort reform. One of the biggest factors in driving up cost.
