Where to buy pin trading supplies?

I posted this on the collector's board, but didn't get any answers so I'm coming here!

I would like to get starter sets for our 10 & 7 year old boys. We're not into the value thing at all. I just think it would be a good experience for them to learn to approach people and converse about a trade.

Where can I buy starter set? We don't live anywhere near a Disney store, so we will probably have to buy online.

How much can I expect to pay for a starter set?

Like I said...I don't even want to know what pins are valuable, etc. We just want to have the fun of trading pins!

This is the link to the official Disney Pin Trading Online store, they don't have started lanyards though. You can probably get a starter lanyard (come with 4 or 6 pins) on ebay that is new. I have great luck getting pins on ebay. Otherwise, wait until you get to the parks and let your kids pick their lanyard out, they have them in a bunch of different characters.

I don't know for sure but I think the starter set is 24.50 or 29.50...could be very wrong. Individual pins run 8.95 and up on average.

We don't get pins for value, we get them for events and memories. Its a lot of fun!

Happy Trading!

I've been thinking about the pin trading, too, for DD, just the ones we think are pretty. Now that I looked at the link posted above, I'm afraid it could become quite addictive! Am I right? I don't need something else to become obsessed about! :teeth:

Pin trading is VERY addictive!! But so much fun too. Our family started in 2000 when the official pin trading started in the Disney parks. Now everytime we go we pin trade, but we also have $$$ sunk into pins, probably enough to pay for another trip to WDW. We used to be able to get pins for a reasonable price $4 at the Disney Store. You can still buy pins on ebay to get you started. I have seen 'new' starter sets in the $30 range, but that is about what you can buy them in the parks for too. Be careful on ebay, buy with a reputable pin seller- there are alot of 'fake' disney pins out there and the CM's won't be able to trade for those.
We have met so many friendly people and CM's during our pin trading and that is really the best part.

eBay has lots of trade bait (low priced, less "collectible pins").

buy from an established dealer, avoid sedesma knock offs.

you kiddos can then stalk the CM to trade their way up to the ones they really want.

lots of fun, gives DS something to do now that he's older.

i've taken to collecting the sets/lithos...good luck.

You can always check EBAY. I got my starter set there. Just check the feedback and make sure you are getting official disney pins. Sometimes they sell the less quality pins that are not tradeable. I just purchase 30 pins for just over $2.00 each and I plan to use these to trade with cast members for better pins.

Also there are certain cast members that only trade with kids. I can't remember the color of the lanyard. I think they wear green lanyards. They usually have some nice pins.

What I did like the previous poster was to buy the 1.99 pins on ebay (I used a seller called pinscheap)- he carries all real pins that can be traded easily at the parks. My kids loved trading pins- my only advice is buy plenty cheap to trade- because trading really is fun and addictive! It brought my two shy girls out of their shells and they loved trading with CM's.

All of the resort gift shops carry started sets. If your kids want to pick out their own, you could wait until you get down there. I also bought pins on Ebay. I got 10 for about 25.00. Way cheaper than at Disney, and they are ones my DD will want to trade. I made sure they weren't ones she would get attached to. Have a great trip!!

I always buy our pins from ebay. When looking always make sure they list that disney is wrote on the back of the pins. To get the best value try not to buy any pin over $2.50. Also remember you have to add shipping to the order. To figure out if you are getting a good deal add the entire total with shipping then divide by the number of pins you are buying. If it is under $3.00 it is a great deal. The pins start at least $6.00 in the parks so anything half price is great. Also remember it does not matter what the pin is as long as disney is on the back because you are trading for the pins that you actually want. Good luck with the pin trading.

Is it better to buy the starter sets complete with lanyards, or is there another way to do it?

Thanks for all the great info!!

Just be prepared! My SIL bought a starter set for my DGD so that she could start trading. Well, she is addicted, and I admit I am too. She had more fun trading than anything else she did. I don't even want to think about the money that I spent feeding this little habit ;) . It was worth it when we came back and I watched her lay out all of her new pins and tell her Mom and Dad all about each one. We are going to try to get a bigger set from Ebay so that she has more to start with on the next trip, as she will not part with her treasures once she has them. Have fun!

Actually your other post did get responses. Not sure if you were looking for immediate feedback, but you did get some responses.

It's nice to begin with a starter set. The ones in the parks have 2 pairs of the same pin to encourage trading. Like previous posters, you cannot go wrong getting the cheap pins on e-bay and trading up with the CM's. My wife gets them on clearance from the Disney Store and then trades for the ones she is looking for. She has slowed down after about 50 pins on 3 lanyards and now only wears the ones she likes. She always keeps a couple of spare pins to trade especially when a little one wants to trade with her.

Enjoy!

Just one thing to keep in mind when buying "Traders"... you really do want ugly or undesireable pins otherwise your kids will want to keep them all and want you to buy even more pins in the parks. Trust me... I learn this the hard and expensive way :)

Ok, everyone got me interested enough that I went online this a.m. to www.mousepinsonline.com and bought 14 pins for $31.25, including shipping! :cool1:

They are going out of business and liquidating their pins--most are 2.50 or 1.75. I just got ones I thought DD would like and some she wouldn't so she can trade. I am keeping my Alice in Wonderland pins though!! :rotfl:

Now, I just need to know some info about lanyards. Can you buy them all over in the parks? (Assuming yes, but..) Do they have different ones? We will want to get one as soon as we arrive to put all the above pins on. Thanks!

I saw the lanyards in many stores in the parks- most places that sell pins also sell the lanyards. If you want to get a lanyard as soon as you are there-if you are staying onsite try the gift shop. They come in all colors- plus a few special design ones.

You can buy lanyards all over the park. If you are a AAA member you can get a AAA travel one for free at the AAA travel hut next to city hall in DL. Good luck and as always, have fun!
