Yes, I would also recommend staying off property. I like the Best Western on Harbor Blvd. It's closer to the parks than 2 out of 3 Disney hotels. So unless you can afford to stay in the Grand Californian.

This is from a park and Jeff, you are right, this Mickey is in a space suit and he is from a shop. But he's not from the MK/Tomorrowland.

YES...getting closer...there's a CM in the picture; you have to use this "thing" with not only Meet and Greet's but other attractions as well.
