I mean they are are all over the house. I have over 30 photo books, boxes of pics and negs and cds. Is there a fireproof storage big enough??? Thinking fire safe "safe" type thing.

I store mine just like you, all over the house. I have tons of pictures, some in albums, some in boxes, and some scrapped, and have a very small house. I have some old albums stored in plastic bins in my basement, and have burned all my digital pics to cd, but they are stored in the next room to my computer. If my house ever burned down, I would lose all of them. I do share my pics, and would be able to get a lot back from people I have emailed to, and pics of trips that I went on with others. I have some pic uploaded to snapfish and photobucket, so I would be able to get them too. All my old negatives are in photo boxeswith old pics in a corner of my bedroom. Not terribly organized, but it's what works for me. I've thought about a fire proof safe at least for the cd's but haven't got one. I always got double prints and shared them with others before I went digital, so I think I'd be able to get a lot of pics back if anything ever happened. I try not to think about it.

Another with stuff all over. I have a few boxes of negatives in my basement- along with duplicate pictures. I have photo albums up to here! Some in a box in the basement, some in a bookcase in my living room and some under my coffee table. 2 years ago I had started scanning to my computer and putting on disc and extra hard drive my older 35mm photos. I got from 1989- 1995 or 96 done- I haven't had time lately to do more. I also switched them from the big photo albums to the small 100 picture ones. I have a looooooong way to go. I have all my digitals backed up on an external hard drive- not all on disc tho. I should do it immediately but I have so many pictures I lost track of whats on disc and whats not. I also gave my mom many duplicate photos from my 35mm days. Now both my kids have a bunch of pictures on the computers too. Thats another thing- we have a laptop and a pc- so there are some pictures that are downloaded to both- some on just one or the other.

If you don't have them saved on CD/DVD format, save them them on them now!!

It's a matter of when...not if... the hard drive fails. Hard drives will fail at some pojnt in time. It may be years, months or days from now. I had a brand new HD in a brand new computer fail one month after I got it.

When you burn (copy) a CD/DVD put (write) the date you burned it on the disk. Concensus is they will last at least five years. It could be more but the format is relatively so new that a track record has not been established. Who knows it may be 20-100 years. We just don't know.

What breaks down is the dye (silver looking stuff) used on the disk.

It would be best to use the gold colored disks.

I am a photo crazy person-love my photos  I have 3 fireproof safes that I store all of my negatives and cd's in. I also save at least 1 copy of pics we have made-school pix etc. Should anything ever happen, I would like to have those memories protected. Still guilty of having lots of pix in boxes and albums too :goodvibes
