Where did you get those awesome tiny topiaries?
Hey Mark & Kristen... We actually made them... here's the excerpt from one of my PJ's....
"Joe promptly started me on the next wedding project to distract me and keep me excited about it (gosh he's so good!). Yet another ambitious idea.... place card holders. Sounds simple enough right? Well Joe's idea... "You know how Disney has all those Mickey Topiaries all over? Lets make little topiaries to hold our place cards". He seriously wanted me to grow 150 or more Mickey topiaries by June? Yeah that was not going to happen. I can't even keep the dandelions alive on the lawn so forget all that Disney topiary bonsai magic. It was a really cute idea and I knew we could figure out a way. However, now more than ever we needed to be more cost conscious and dumping money into place card holders when I wasn't sure if could pay for things we NEEDED for the wedding, could not be done.
I was challenged to come up with a way and a much needed distraction so we started brainstorming... I thought of sculpting all of them out of earth-clay and doing a chia pet kind of thing... but then again I never got my chia pet to grow so wasting my time sculpting 150+ Mickeys would take me FOREVER and when they didn't grow I knew I'd get mad and throw them out...
NEXT... Joe said I had the right idea, to make a mold and cast 150+ and make them look like topiaries... Then AHA, I got it... I remembered my neighbors old model train sets and how his dad would make all these landscapes with trees and grass that looked so real... That's what we would cover them with but making a mold and casting 150+ was not cost effective or time efficient. After looking into a number of molding & casting materials there was just not anything cheap enough that would have made it worth all the time it would have taken. I needed pre-made 2-3 inch characters, cheap!
Disney Store had playset that were exactly what I was looking for... set of 6 characters per set, on sale 2 sets for $20... that's $1.66 a piece too much... I wanted it for a dollar or less. I tried dollar stores, nothing... I searched online, nothing... I found a lot of 200+ pvc figures that were "mostly disney" on ebay but from the picture it didn't look like there would be enough. Finally, I hit the jackpot at the Dollar Tree Store (I was just there, they seem to change stock daily). Filled up my cart with 150 and checked out.
[just a little aside... DOLLAR TREE LADIES! They always have tons of Disney stuff... great Disney stuff for $1... especially for the kids]
Ok, to finish off the project... Spray them all green, spray glue them, drop them in a bag of green train model turf, stick them in a tiny terracotta pot, and finish it off with with a little wire loop to hold the place card. (we figured our guests can take them home and use them as memo holders or to hold our wedding pic."
