"I found love in a KMart store......""
Aisle 6, to be exact. It was 9:17 pm on a damp and rainy Tuesday night in September. They were having a blue light special on pistachio nuts. I don't even like pistachio nuts -- but hey, they were the blue light special, it must be a good deal, right??
We both reached for the last bag of pistachios -- our fingers lightly touched.... we gazed into each other's eyes.... and well.... it's been 23 years of wedded bliss.
Okay, I made that all up. Except for the part where I said I don't like pistachios. And our 23rd wedding anniversary is next month. But I can't remember the exact moment we fell in love.
OK, I
didn't make this up.
I was 20 years old, about a week from my 21st birthday. I was convinced I would never find "someone" and had been discussing it at length with Scott, my best girlfriend. The smartest thing he ever said was, "When you stop looking, you will find him."
Well, I stopped looking.
Not even a week thereafter I reported to work one afternoon for the closing shift.
There he stood, in all his glory.
My knees went weak, my heart started pounding and I knew he was THE ONE.
It might have been the uniform. You know, there is just something about a man in uniform, even if he is the store security guard.
I went up to him and said, "You know, every guard we've ever had before had been either black or gay, and you're not black..."
And he replied, "I'm not gay, either."
Fate smiled on me that day. I went home and told my mother, "I met my husband today." (And no, I didn't say that about every guy I met.

)
But I was convinced it was not to be.
One afternoon he was leaving his shift, and my shift was cut. He suggested we go to the local taqueria. I agreed. Neither one of us could afford food, so we had soft drinks.

He told me his life story and I was enthralled.
We decided to go back to his grandmother's house where he lived.
We watched "Alien Nation" and shared IBC Root Beer and string cheese.
I sat on one end of the couch. He sat on the other.
I thought, "Well, he's not interested."
As we parted, he knelt, took my hand, and kissed it.
That was the day before my 21st birthday. We have been together 16 years.

I no longer work at Target. I supported him as he finished school. He supported me as I finished college. I am now a teacher, and he is a network analyst currently working in London for 18 days. We have two beautiful children and I am very blessed.
And sometimes, I go back to that Target store, now a trashy Dollar-Rama, stand in that special spot, and let my mind wander back to that special day, the day that I found love in a Target store.
