Where can you buy calling cards to Canada from the US?

I currently live in the US, and I have a friend that lives in Canada. We really want to talk to each other, but we don't want to use Skype and I dont know where to buy calling cards. Does anyone know a store that's common throughout the United States and that sells calling cards to Canada? Thank you so much in advance! This really means a lot to me. I dont care how much it costs, as long as it's not a totally ridiculous price.

Hiya,

I have bought them before at gas stations on the highway during trips to the States. Usually they're about 5 cents per minute...just make sure you buy the ones with no activation fee. Some of them you pay only 1 cent per minute but there is a 2 dollar charge when the person picks up the phone. You're better off paying slightly more per minute IMO because otherwise, if you get voicemail, you'll be out the activation fee each time. Good luck!

Have you thought about having your friend buy you a calling card from Canada and mail it you you?

I purchased a President's Choice LD calling card and the costs are $.04/minutes. We used it from the USA to call back home in Canada. I think they expire 90 days after activation. I think they come in $5, $10 and $20 denominations

I guess it would depend on if you found a cheaper per minute rate from a USA retailer - but $.04/minute was cheap in my mind.

Ask you phone company how much long distance to Canada costs. My recent phone providers (Telus and Shaw) charged just $0.04 per minute for long distance anywhere in Canada or the US. Calling cards were not going to save me much.

If you need calling cards, look at the selection in convenience stores or your local grocery store.

Most of the calling cards you will find will likely allow calling to anywhere in the US or Canada -- it's a common calling area with the same country code. Just read the fine print to ensure it isn't valid for US only. These cards should offer calls around $0.02 to $0.03 per minute.

Otherwise, look for calling cards that specify international calling. Again, rates to Canada should be relatively cheap, no more than $0.04 per minute.

Canadian calling cards are bit more expensive. Presidents Choice offers $0.04 per minute and is sold in many grocery stores. Chinese grocery stores often have huge stashes of calling cards for calling overseas. Some of these have better rates for the US, $0.02 to $0.03 per minute.

On a CiCi calling card, I can get .01 per minute to the UK, but it's .05 to the US. Go figure.

Get a Magic Jack....in the US they cost about $20 for a full year of unlimited use.

You can also Facetime on an Ipod Touch....for free.


If you really want a phone card they are sold at just about every check out counter....grocery stores, Walmart, Target, gas stations etc.

We've always used the President's Choice calling cards from Real Canadian Superstore with really good results. If you have a calling card that's about to expire from them, you can purchase another one in a smaller amt, and have the amt transferred from the one that's about to expire onto the new card, so that you don't lose any money on it.

Last time I was in the U.S. I just picked up a calling card from a gas station.
It was either .04 or .05 cents a minute. Walmart sells them too, prob drugstores?
Have you checked how much your phone company charges per minute?
In Canada my phone company charges .04/minute.
