Hello DISers! When i go on long day trips i usually use a small purse-style backpack. I would like to try a crossbody- style bag when i travel to Disney in October bc i am tired of having to take off the backpack every time i need something. The only problem is- what store(s) can i find them? I have tried target, kohl's and Sears (i think it was sears) with no luck i wont buy one online. I need to SEE it, feel how it fits, and feel how the closures work.

Thanks!

AND THE WINNER IS.....

The Overland Shasta Sling Bag

It has a pouch for my water bottle, two roomy compartments, and a really comfortable strap. It is easy to swing around to get things out. Even better is my hubby will carry it if needed. It can serve as my "purse" as well as a carry-on for the plane. The only things missing are a zippered pocket within one of compartments and a clip for keys. But the pros of this bag outweigh the missing elements.

Thank for all of the suggestions. Because of this thread, I am not IN LOVE with Zappos and ebags. This could be dangerous! :lmao:

A lot of people on the boards are a huge fans of the Vera Bradley Hipster, which is cross body. I Personally am loving all things Vera Bradley... they are very light weight to begin with and wash easily. You can see if you have a store near you. I just bought a new backpack from Vera Bradley today for our october trip. I really really wanted to just do the Hipster, but having young children, I just think I still need more room. If I didn't, the Hipster would be my first choice!

I've found a few small bags at Dillards and Urban Outfitters. When I went, I made a really small one. I bought a plain canvas crossbody bag from a craft store, made it a tad shorter(or something, I know I had to resize it) and included a zippered pocket for cards and money. It was just big enough to fit a poncho for KRR. I don't have kids and didn't bring snacks, but it was perfect. I did have a tan line from it, but it went away. This is what I used as a pattern, you could probably even use it like this if you don't need much. http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/purse-on-a-string-147371/?F_All=Y

I bought a Coach cross body purse about 4 years ago. It's thin, lightweight but very durable. The strap is so comfortable that sometimes I forget I'm wearing it.The zipper is easy to close as well. There are Coach stores everywhere so you can go and check it out if you're interested. It runs about $ 110 but I consider it worth it because I use it for all the day trips we take in addition to Disney. It fits my needs and still looks brand new so for me it was a good investment!

It sounds like what you're looking for is a messenger bag. Do you have any travel stores near you (stores that sell travel supplies)? They often have a really good selection of travel-type bags in different sizes, colors, etc.

Another suggestion might be a sporting goods store like REI. They often have bags for hikers - not so much "purses" but messenger bags. Baggelini makes lots of different styles.

Have you looked at places like Zappos online? I know you said you need to be able to see and touch the bag to know if you like it -- but the good thing about Zappos is, they have free shipping and free return shipping, so if you don't like something, you can return it for free. You could get a few things to try out, then return what does't work.

Good luck and "happy hunting!":)

I don;t know your purse budget but I got my mother a Dooney and Burke Disney themed one.
I am not sure if they are still available to purchase from Disney.com. You can call up the World of Disney store in downtown disney and ask if they are still selling them.
A Disney purse to go with a Disney trip :cool1:

I love my Vera large hipster!! Some stores are having end of year clearances now and if you go on line and sign up you get a coupon.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I originality wanted to find one of those bags that look like elongated backpacks, but with one strap that you wear across ytour body and you can easily slide it from your back to your hip. I would post a picture of what I am talking about, but I can't find one!

I took a look at the bagallini bags and I think they are my style. I am heading to Marshall's on Monday to see if I can find one. :thumbsup2

Let us know if you find one !
I need to head to Marshall's for another one, too !:thumbsup2

You can get a cross body bag at just about any dept store these days. But the hipster and mini-hipster bags from Vera Bradley are great. They're great quality. I've had one for almost a year, I use it everyday, and it's in fabulous shape.

Went to our Marshalls, and they didn't have a big selection this time :furious:

I'll keep trying, and check out TJ Max too ! So, hopefully I can find a new one before my October trip.:wizard:

The Patagonia Atom Sling is AWESOME as well and might be what you are looking for. Super light, deceptively small...holds a TON and really nicely distributes the weight. They are on sale online. Cute colors too!:thumbsup2

That is exactly the style of bag i am talking about. I have seen other styles of crossbody bags but i have not found the sling backback. I am going on a hunt today.

Well I struck out at Marshall's and Ross. I didn't try TJ Maxx. I spent some time on Zappos looking at crossbody bags and I have chosen two I really like. I am considering ordering both so I can see which I like best. One is a great price, that other is a little more than I was willing to spend.

Basically, I need something that will hold all of my basics (small wallet, iphone in an otterbox case, small point-and-shoot Nikon camera, tissues, wet ones. Excedrin Migraine, Tums) plus one or two bottles of water, park maps, and my paper "itinerary". I don't like bags with "flaps" over the main compartment and I don't like bags with too many outside pockets and zippers. I also don't like prints (so Vera Bradley was out of the running!)

Here is what I am definitely ordering:

Here is the other one I am in love with, but I think it is bigger than what I want:

Again, thanks everyone for your wonderful advice. :worship:
