Where can a Canadian buy a real molcajete? (mexican mortar and pestle)

I have wanted to get a molcajete for ages and ages..... and I would like to avoid getting stuck with a "fake" that is made of concrete and will just produce grit in my teeth. I'd like to get a real one. Fancy pig shapes are not important.

We go pretty regularly now to WDW (hooray!). And also we are planning to pop over to Buffalo in August. I'm assuming that Orlando is a far better bet for possibly finding a molcajete. Can anyone help me? We would likely be staying in Windsor Hills, so somewhere within a fairly reasonable driving distance would be nice.

TIA, any help would be much appreciated.

Check Amazon.com. They have many different types, authentic lava rock molcajetes, and granite molcajetes. Lots of different ones, round ones, pig styles, etc. Read the reviews to find exactly what you're looking for. I think the granite ones might be very nice. :thumbsup2

I got my first molcajete in Mexico many years ago. It was great, very nicely balanced and never tipped over. The last two I've bought for gifts came from Mexican grocery stores in Texas and neither were as nice as the first one I got. I like to try them before buying to see if the bowl is deep enough to suit me, and to make sure they're balanced and won't tip over. But since you're having a harder than usual time finding one, I'd suggest ordering one from Amazon.

haa haa.. I got a real one from my Lab! I have always loved the real deal!!
might also want to check some chemistry sites

Real ones tend to be really heavy...don't think I'd want to fly with one, but if you're driving it wouldn't be a big deal.

Are you near Toronto? Any decent Asian grocer will carry them.

We are very near Toronto, and I'm willing to go hunting for one.... what type of Asian grocer?

And is there a specific molcajete on Amazon that anyone might recommend?

You could just head down to Chinatown in the downtown Toronto area and walk in any of the small grocery stores. It seems to me, though, that even the smallest towns in Ontario these days seem to have an Asian grocery (with a mix of Indian, Korean, and chinese products). If you have any of these in your area, I would pop in and ask if they have any (or if they can recommend where you can find one). They will likely be a lot less expensive than one from Williams-Sonoma.

I checked out Williams-Sonoma, and yes, they have one that retails for $75. It looks big and the reviews are very positive. Sounds like the real thing.

I've never seen one at my local Korean grocery store, nor at T&T... I will start looking around. At least now I have a baseline to compare with.

Thank you everyone!
