I'm sure this has asked a thousand times before but when is the best time to book flights?

As soon as they come out or wait for a sale?

I'd always heard that the price goes up as the availability gets less but then have heard others say that they drop if not selling!

I'm not looking to go until oct 15 but no the flights can be out a good year in advance so want to have all the facts ready.

I'm in the midlands and am looking at Virgin Manchester and thomson from either Manchester or Birmingham. I believe that virgin include a car and thomson don't so I need to factor this into cost.

I went to California 3 years ago and remember that I booked through dial a flight which was £400 less than booking direct. Any others like that?

Thanks in advance

I can only talk from my limited experience: we booked for August 2014 in September 2013, and were very happy with the price (£700pp return direct from Gatwick to MCO). We were able to take advantage of a sale, but the flights had come down by £300pp from the previous week). In the last few weeks, I keep reading threads about people struggling to get reasonably priced flights for August 2014, so I'm led to believe if you can find a reasonable price early on, it's worth booking it!

Best advise I have ever been given is, have a price in mind you can afford and are willing to pay, when you see that price book and don't look again.
