You can remove them, but you can still taste them. I can't count many times I have sent a sandwich back because I asked for it with no onions, and you guessed it...onions! And they think I am an idiot, because they just bring it back after pulling the onions off. Ummmm...if that is what I wanted, I could have saved myself the trouble of speaking the two words...No ONION!
Okay....I am done ranting...haha
I agree completely! I don't mind it so much at fast food places because the onion isn't the same. I can pick them off and there is no taste left behind, but not so when you're talking a sliver of a nasty raw onion. I feel the same way about tomatoes too. The lettuce wouldn't bother me as it wouldn't leave the taste behind, but I don't want it either. While I can remember picking onion off, I can't remember a restaurant where all this wasn't on the side. Oh well, they say the memory is the first thing to go.
I will say though that I do like vidalia onions and it's rare to find them served. I do em up at home and mince them in the food processor and they're awesome on hot dogs. I am no hot dog fan, but grilled (the hot dog, not the onion) with onions, I can do that!

I had to have my hamburgers with cheese ( sometimes bacon) lettuce, onions, pickle, tomato, mustard, mayo ; ketchup and the zesty onion ring sauce ( that BK gives you with your onion rings) smothered all over it!
