I have an awful update to report. My dh is in the hospital. Apparently his "stomach flu" was a heart attack.

He has super major blockages and is going under the knife this morning.

Wish us luck, we are going to need it.

In July I had a fever slightly over 100 starting about noon. I felt horrible.

That night I told my husband I thought I needed to go to the ER (I am kind of an ER junkie - I go for anything).

Thank goodness I went. My BP was 40/30. The last thing I remember is them cutting my clothes off.

I was on a vent and feeding tube and unconscious for a week. I had acute sepsis (blood poisoning) from e-coli. If I had waited even a couple hours more I would be dead. My heart, liver and kidneys were all shutting down. I came very, very, very close to dying.

I now have instructions to go to the ER immediately if my temp goes over 100.

So sorry arminnie. Thank goodness you went to the hospital in time and made full recovery ! My SisIL had similar experience and lucky to be alive!

A couple yrs ago my DH had an terrible experience - he had been fine, then all of a sudden he felt faint and temp was 103*. I rushed him to urgent care, where dr started IV and called ambulance. By the time we got to hospital he was 105*+ delirious and admitted to ICU . After 3 hospitals and many tests drs concluded he had a blocked bile duck requiring surgery. Illness can be so scary, praising God he survived and is good as new ^i^! I don't mess with elevated fevers in adults....they can very dangerous and need to be checked, better safe than sorry.

Everyone's stories are sad but we are not talking about stomach viruses, heart attacks, or sepsis. The husband has a confirmed case of influenza. A high fever is typical. Keep an eye on him and if it gets bad enough (you'll know by monitoring dehydration and lucidity, as you are currently doing) take him to the hospital. Otherwise, he should stay home and not spread his illness in public.

It also helps to know what's normal for each person in your household. My DH helped me unload groceries from the car with a fever of 105, but I don't think I've ever had a fever over 102 in my life. DH's base temp is over 99 whereas mine is the average 98.6 or even slightly below at times. Our son is like DH but our DDs are like me. So knowing this, I have a better idea of when to panic or not. DH and DS get fevers easily, and they can spike quickly, but even with high fevers they have always been lucid and have never needed medical help. My DDs don't spike high fevers - they are like me in that regard. I truly believe that the number on the thermometer is only one guide (and it's a better guide if you know what's typical of that person), and what is almost more important is the general condition of the person.

OP here -- well, we took my DH back to the doctor since he was just not getting better. Turns out he has pneumonia on top of the flu! Aaaugh. Anyway, he is now on some very strong antibiotics, and we're watching him very closely and will take him to the ER if he gets any worse. He is already a bit better today after starting the antibiotics.

Oh, wow, but I guess not uncommon. The *one* time I had the flu, I thought I was getting better but then didn't and by week 2, I had pneumonia. Now back then they weren't testing for the flu so I may have had pneumonia from the start but it took me a long time to get better after that.

I've had the flu twice in my life and I had pink eye after one bout and a sinus infection after the second. I always get a flu shot now. Someone I know at work had the flu shot a couple of months ago, but her and her son have both been diagnosed with the flu. Apparently they got the strain not covered by the shot.

Yup. Very very common. I never used to get the flu shot because of my egg allergy and every year from 2003-2010, I got pneumoni or bronchitis secondary to the flu which would land me in the hospital for a week or more.

I now get the flu shot because I have an allergist who is willing to give it to me even though I'm anaphylactic to eggs.
