When would you take an adult to the ER for high fever?

Just an fyi.......with a fever that high if he is not taking in adequate fluids he will be dehydrated.
What does your mom say about how he looks?

Well, of course he looks like crap with the flu, but we're keeping track of not only how much he's drinking, but how often he is urinating and (tmi) the color to watch his hydration. So far, he is a little dehydrated but not in the "danger zone," she thinks. So we are pushing fluids and hoping he gets better soon! I think we're keeping a pretty close eye on it.

wow, did doc prescribe an antiviral when he was diagnosed?
is he having any pain? breathing ok? skin color is good?

I had a 103 Temperature when I had H1N1. My husband didn't think it was bad enough to take me to the hospital. I was starting to "see things" . He finally called Telehelp and they told him to get me to ER. It ended up I had the H1N1 and pnumonia as well. After 6 days in the hospital I was finally feeling better. I seem to spike high fevers though.

Lol thats what i meant by "how he looks"........looking for signs of dehydration.

So, how is he today? Probably still cooking right?

My dh is still running a low grade fever 99ish. He has been sick since since Thurs. He did get fluids at the urgent care earlier. He is getting over the stomach flu which hit him like a freight train.

He is eating and drinking now but I think not drinking enough. His lips are dry.

OP, do you have the BIG insulated cups from the gas station? I use those as the water jug for him to drink. Hopefully he wakes up better.

A fever is the body's way of fighting an infection/virus. It's a natural process. Since he was diagnosed with the flu, it is coming down with meds & he is staying hydrated I would opt to stay home instead of infecting everyone else with the flu. Unless of course things get worse or the fever won't come down at all.

Still cooking, but a lot lower this morning (tends to be the case). He was up to 102.8 last night, but that's not as bad as 103.5. Just working on the fluids now.

I hope the Tamiflu kicks in today. He is one miserable sick cookie!

Edited: we do have some big insulated cups. Not a bad idea. He does not want to drink very cold stuff (like over ice), so he's just drinking cool/room temp water and Gatorade. But so long as he's drinking...

I am really glad that you have your Mum to help you. It really must help to have someone that can be a professional in house...house call..LOL Good luck to all of you and just watch you all don't get it as well.

Hi OP. As an ER/ICU RN you are doing the right thing. Lots and lots of fluids! Warm, cold, room temperature, makes no difference. Whatever he will drink is good. Tylenol and ibuprofen to help the symptoms of fever but until the virus has done its thing, he will stillrun fever and with the flu, it's high, even in adults. Tamiflu will not cure flu. The most it will do is help to shorten the timeframe of symptoms. As per others recommendations, if he becomes incoherent, confused, stops urinating or it decreases to a minimal amount, then go to the ER. And it's great this his nurse mom can help you through all of this. Hope nobody else gets it. Here's to him feeling better soon.

Thanks! My mom is a former ER RN and these are her thoughts as well. So we're just keeping an eye on him, medicating, giving fluids, and waiting!

Hope all have a Merry (non-sick) Christmas!

OY! Grand daughter 16 started with flu on Friday, went to urgent care, started Tami-flu, this is a flu with extreme coughing and aching...her fever went to 102.
.Next day her mom got it.. same thing wiped her out but she finally got to the urgent care started Tami flu....she said her eye balls hurt...they are doing good today..

The eyeball thing was one of my DH's main complaints - he said it felt like someone was driving a spike behind his eyes.

He's so much better tonight! Fever is down to just 99 or so (with drugs), so I think he's on the way to recovery.

Another nurse here, and these are my thoughts as well. I'm really not even sure I'd take my child to the ER for these symptoms as well, especially if they are able to keep fluids down.

That's a bit dramstic.:lmao:

Dramstic??? Is that a mash-up of drama and drastic?? :rotfl2: Kind of like grool, from Mean Girls?? Great/cool???

I knew what you meant, just teasing you!!

I think if she really wanted to be dramatic, or drastic....she could have used "bollocks", now there is a British word with some ooomph!!!

OP, glad your Husbands' fever is coming down.

Merry! Merry!

Ha. Apparently it is way too early in the morning word.

Better fix that.
